It's rare for a band to follow up their watershed album with an album of equal merit, but that's exactly what Brazil's Sepultura did with ARISE. Where 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS thrust the band into the forefront of the international metal scene, ARISE--by matching BENEATH's songwriting, chops, and brilliantly brutal execution--made sure that the band maintained their status.
ARISE's single "Dead Embryonic Cells" proved popular, thanks in no small part to its controversial video. But it's the musicality of this track, and tunes like the title cut and "Altered State," that represent Sepultura's incontestable power. Lead guitarist Andreas Kisser shreds without ceasing, and singer Max Cavelera growls and screams amidst double-bass, jackhammer rhythms. BENEATH THE REMAINS may top more lists as an essential album, but that's largely because of its place in the band's discography. Equally intense and accomplished, ARISE is no less of album for being the successor.

This is as good as metal will ever get Sepultura, at least the early years, will go down in metal fan's hearts as probably the best band ever. Arise is a perfect, flawless release from metal masters. Max is truly a gift to the musical world, his voice and aggression is unmatched by anyone out there. He does it without sounding fake. Andreas and Iggor are two amazing musicians. These guys brought a little Brazilian-influenced sound to this release, but fortunately they did not overdo it (unlike in Roots). A true classic. My first experience with these brazilian masters The first S album I heard and still my favourite. Very original thrash / death metal with an excellent drumming by Igor Cavalera ( He was around 21 when this album was recorded... And soooo many drummers would kill for drumming like this when they were this age...).Buy it , and get a great dose of neck - breaking extreme metal. Arise album
$15.05 All tracks have been digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
Brazilian death metal upstart Sepultura took an incredible leap forward with their second full-length album, 1987's Schizophrenia. Though recorded only a year after the band's primitive debut, Schizophrenia displayed a remarkable sonic evolution in both technical and creative terms. Constant touring, rehearsal, and the addition of new lead guitarist Andreas Kisser obviously helped the band achieve the musical proficiency necessary to pull off its complex songs. This is apparent as soon as the Psycho-inspired intro theme gives way to the precise, lightning-quick staccato riffing of "From the Past Comes the Storm." But Sepultura immediately raises the stakes with the excellent riffs and precise soloing on "To the Wall" and "Escape From the Void." The seven-minute instrumental "Inquisition Symphony" is simply breathtaking in its diversity, perfectly showcasing the band's incredible ...
| | Sepultura Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation CD (1986) Remastered
Arise CD music
$15.05 MORBID VISIONS/BESTIAL DEVASTATION was originally released as 2 separate EPs.
Tracks 1-8 are from MORBID VISIONS and 9-13 are from BESTIAL DEVASTATION.
BESTIAL DEVASTATION recorded at J.G. Estudios, Belo Horizonte, Brazil in August 1985. MORBID VISIONS recorded at Estudio Vice Versa, Belo Horizonte, Brazil in August 1986. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye.
Sepultura's early work can be described as extremely raw, under-produced, and unspectacular death metal, hardly a harbinger of their groundbreaking early-'90s output. Thankfully, Roadrunner conveniently reissued the band's first album, 1986's Morbid Visions, and its 1985 EP Bestial Devastation on one CD. Recorded with minimal time and money, this ...
| | Sepultura Beneath The Remains CD (1989) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Arise music CDs
$15.05 Digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
With 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura began a remarkable four-album streak of bold, innovative thrash metal that is nearly unparalleled in the genre. Here the Brazilian quartet transformed from a promising death metal band into a musical force of nature, with Max Cavalera's gruff, primal vocals and potent rhythm-guitar riffs leading the way for the blistering guitar lines of Andreas Kisser and the crushing rhythms of bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Igor Cavalera (Max's brother).
Every selection on REMAINS seethes with intensity, particularly the opening title track, which moves from a haunting acoustic-guitar passage to a fierce metallic barrage, and the record's lead single, "Inner Self," which is marked by Igor's pummeling double-bass work and Kisser's searing, technically accomplished solos. Having grown up idolizing bands like Slayer and Metallica, the young members of Sepultura were on the verge of rivaling their heroes with REMAINS. Simply put, this is one of the best--and most consistent--thrash albums ever recorded.

| | Sepultura Chaos A.D. CD (1993)
Arise songs
$14.69 Sepultura truly claimed its place on the heavy-metal world stage with 1993's CHAOS A.D., a focused, dose-of-thunder release that crystallized the Brazilian outfit's aesthetic. Propulsive rhythms, gravel-voice shouting, and epic guitar riffs drenched in nerve-fraying distortion come together in a perfect marriage here. But while Sepultura's music was originally inspired by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, CHAOS A.D. feels considerably more stripped-down than the music of these mentors--progressive changes and long, showy solos are few and far between.
Instead, Sepultura emphasizes fierce, straightforward structures that have more in common with hardcore's no-nonsense approach than metal's glamorous ...
| | Sepultura Roots CD (1996)
Arise album
$15.05 On its sixth album, Brazil's most famous head-banging outfit takes a page from the nu-metal book but, more importantly, combines its brutal thrash-metal sound with indigenous music from its homeland, occasionally utilizing the percussion and chants of the country's Xavantes tribe to powerful effect. The biggest standouts are the lively, acoustic-guitar-driven "Itsari" and the epic closer "Canyon Jam," both improvisations with Xavantes musicians that make for welcome contrasts to the record's intense bombast. Elsewhere, Brazilian percussionist Carlinhos Brown drives the rhythm-laden "Ratamahatta," a track that exemplifies the quartet's distinctive brand of "tribal metal."
ROOTS marks a big step forward for the thrash-metal genre because of the way Sepultura matches its carefully controlled mayhem with the dynamic nature of its influences and collaborators. Faith No More singer Mike Patton, Korn frontman Jonathan Davis, and Limp Bizkit's DJ Lethal all pop up on "Lookaway," a dark, grinding tune with Eastern-inspired ...
| | Mudvayne Lost And Found CD (2005)
Arise CD music
$8.99 Drummer Matt McDonough and bassist Ryan Martinie play as if they are the same person, tossing off impossibly complex lock-step riffs ("Determined," "Just") like most bands hit an open E chord. On "Happy?" and "Fall into Sleep," singer Chad Gray moves from a throat-shredding rasp to sweet melodicism at the drop of a hat, taking angst-filled lyrics to new heights of ...
| | Apoptygma Berzerk Harmonizer CD (2002)
Arise music CDs
$13.89 Principally recorded at The Blue Room, London, England and City Club, Detroit, Michigan.
Apoptygma Berzerk (aka Stephan Groth) has been exerting his influence on the EBM (electronic body music) scene from his home base in Norway since the beginning of the 1990s. Harmonizer finds him refining more fully his pop hookcraft while still hewing close to the electro/industrial/goth mainstream. The chilly synthesizer textures and jackboot dance beats are all in place, so fans of labelmate bands like Juno Reactor ...
