Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar); Andreas Kisser (guitar); Paulo Jr. (bass); Igor Cavalera (drums). Additional personnel: Kelly Shaefer, John Tardy, Scott Latour, Francis Howard (background vocals). Reissue producer: Jeff Daniel. Recorded at Nas Nuvens Studio, Rio De Janiero, Brazil on December 15-28, 1988. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye. Digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York. With 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura began a remarkable four-album streak of bold, innovative thrash metal that is nearly unparalleled in the genre. Here the Brazilian quartet transformed from a promising death metal band into a musical force of nature, with Max Cavalera's gruff, primal vocals and potent rhythm-guitar riffs leading the way for the blistering guitar lines of Andreas Kisser and the crushing rhythms of bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Igor Cavalera (Max's brother). Every selection on REMAINS seethes with intensity, particularly the opening title track, which moves from a haunting acoustic-guitar passage to a fierce metallic barrage, and the record's lead single, "Inner Self," which is marked by Igor's pummeling double-bass work and Kisser's searing, technically accomplished solos. Having grown up idolizing bands like Slayer and Metallica, the young members of Sepultura were on the verge of rivaling their heroes with REMAINS. Simply put, this is one of the best--and most consistent--thrash albums ever recorded. (Note: The 1997 remastered version of BENEATH THE REMAINS features three bonus tracks, including a cover of Os Mutantes' "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer.") Sepultura's 1989 release, Beneath the Remains, marked the band's transition from third-world obscurity to major contenders in the international extreme metal arena. As soon as the deceptively gentle acoustic intro gives way to the title track's thrashing brutality, the listener is propelled at maximum speed and intensity through to the very last crunch of "Primitive Future." In between, Sepultura offer their first bona fide hits with "Inner Self" and the inspired "Stronger Than Hate," featuring lyrics written by Atheist's Kelly Shaefer. It's not over there as they charge ahead with the triple threat of "Mass Hypnosis," "Sarcastic Existence," and "Slaves of Pain," all of which feature mind-blowing solos from guitarist Andreas Kisser, thunderous double-bass work from drummer Igor Cavalera, and the furious howling of singer Max Cavalera. The complete absence of filler here makes this one of the most essential death/thrash metal albums of all time. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia With 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura began a remarkable four-album streak of bold, innovative thrash metal that is nearly unparalleled in the genre. Beneath The Remains
$8.99 Mudvayne: Chad Gray (vocals); Greg Tribbett (guitar); Ryan Martinie (bass guitar); Matt McDonough (drums). It's been three years for Mudvayne, three years when metal started to reject its "rap" and "nu" prefixes. At first, Lost and Found reflects that realignment. Vocalist Chad Gray and his mates have nixed the nicknames and makeup for their third Epic full-length, and they try to focus on songs instead of heavy music ...
| | H I M Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights CD (2002) (Import) Sweden
Beneath The Remains
$14.45 Swedish ECD import, including video for "Pretending." This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. H.I.M.'s Razorblade Romance was a huge step from the poppy yet raw Greatest Lovesongs, and so their reputation as teenage-girl entertainers began to grow. That was very unfortunate for the old fans of H.I.M., as Razorblade Romance marks the beginning of H.I.M.'s more polished pop era. Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights plunges deeper. The songs lack hooks, the sound is just way too clean, and as the highlights (the tracks "In Joy and Sorrow" and "Pretending") are over before the halfway point, as a whole Deep Shadows doesn't quite satisfy. ~ Antti J. Ravelin H.I.M.'s Razorblade Romance was a huge step from the poppy yet raw Greatest Lovesongs, and so their reputation ...

| | Nightwish Highest Hopes: The Best Of CD (2005) (Import) Hong Kong
Beneath The Remains
$22.05 CD contains bonus DVD. Released at a time when Nightwish's future appeared uncertain because of the shocking departure of charismatic frontwoman and de facto band calling card Tarja Turunen, Highest Hopes is a comprehensive greatest-hits collection spanning the chart-topping Finnish pop-metal act's entire first decade. Summarized in one convenient CD at last, the 16-song set proves that Nightwish were nothing if not consistent -- both in terms of quality and overall style -- throughout the five and a half studio albums recorded during that period. Yes, enduring early numbers like the Tolkien-esque "Elvenpath," the somewhat preposterous, narration-embellished "The Kinslayer," and the neoclassical metal-by-numbers of "Stargazers" eventually gave way to slightly more refined (and restrained) pop-metal singles like "Ever Dream," "Wish I Had an Angel," and "Nemo" (which, one presumes, was about the submarine captain, not the fish), but the relatively seamless transition between them all is made abundantly clear by the non-chronological order in which they are presented here. Likewise, with the exception of their still tentative (and therefore, on this collection, mostly ignored) first album, Nightwish showed equal mastery at composing potent power metal ("Sacrament of Wilderness," "Wishmaster," "Dead to the World") and tear-jerking ballads ("Walking in the Air," "Dead Boy's Poem," "Sleeping Sun") in all phases of their career. They even took Gary Moore's generally forgotten '80s nugget "Over the Hills and Far Away" for their own, recording a debatably definitive version that is wisely included in this disc, alongside a brand new recording of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes." Also keep in mind the band's immaculate instrumental execution through the years, and what this collection proves above all else is that, though they've inspired quite literally dozens of imitators, Nightwish's groundbreaking fusion of melodic power metal, symphonic orchestration, theatrical lyrics, and (of course) Turunen's classically trained, operatic soprano, has arguably ...
| | Thom Yorke Eraser CD (2006)
Beneath The Remains
$9.89 Personnel: Thom Yorke; Jonny Greenwood (piano); Nigel Godrich. Audio Mixer: Nigel Godrich. Arrangers: Thom Yorke; Nigel Godrich. In 2006, with little advance word, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke unveiled his first solo album, THE ERASER, much to the surprise of many of the band's fans. Given that Yorke is the literal voice of the beloved British rock ensemble, these nine songs, produced by Nigel Godrich, don't depart too much from Radiohead's moody, electronica-tinged sound (i.e. KID A, AMNESIAC, HAIL TO THE THIEF), but they do prove to be more intimate, sometimes recalling the hauntingly spare "Rabbit in Your Headlights," Yorke's collaboration with DJ Shadow on U.N.K.L.E.'s PSYENCE FICTION. Like that tune, much of THE ERASER is awash in somber piano lines and minimal beats, as on the dreamy opening title track, while "The Clock" runs on skittering, tightly wound loops. Though there are up-tempo moments on the record, the overall atmosphere is melancholy and sometimes flat-out ominous, qualities that are hand-in-glove with Yorke's ...
