Lead guitarist Allen West didn't join Obituary for their second album, Cause of Death, which makes a bigger difference than you might expect. His replacement is a close associate of the band, James Murphy of the band Death -- the man many consider to be the godfather of death metal -- and he brings his own style to Cause of Death, resulting in an album that sounds like a hybrid of Obituary and Death. This isn't necessarily bad; in fact, it's somewhat fascinating, especially for metalheads well immersed in the Florida school of death metal. You can hear Murphy's influence throughout the album, as he often leads the band into eerie dirge-like moments that sound like the eye of the storm at hand. Murphy's contribution to Cause of Death aside, not much else has changed in the year since Obituary's 1989 debut, Slowly We Rot. The vocals of John Tardy still dominate the proceedings, the drastic tempo changes still set Obituary apart from the majority of their peers of the time, and producer Scott Burns still struggles with seemingly low-budget values that actually sound worse than they did on Slowly We Rot (not in a good, lo-fi way, either). The band's songwriting -- handled almost entirely by Tardy, rhythm guitarist Trevor Peres, and drummer Donald Tardy, with the exception of a Celtic Frost cover, "Circle of the Tyrants" -- has become a bit more progressive (perhaps because of Murphy's influence), as several songs top the five-minute mark (none did previously, averaging a couple minutes less per song) and take more twists and turns than before. These slight differences certainly distinguish Cause of Death from its landmark predecessor, and you can quibble about which approach is better, as many fans have and always will. In the end, Cause of Death is still a great album for its time. Remember, this is 1990 -- still way at the dawn of death metal. And though Obituary would make big strides forward with The End Complete in a year and a half, Cause of Death is nonetheless an intriguing album, especially from a historical perspective. It's not one of the band's best, but it's definitely one of their most interesting and, along with Slowly We Rot, their most distinct. ~ Jason Birchmeier
The hits continued with this classic of Los Angeles psychedelic pop, produced and arranged by the amazing Jack Nitszche, architect of Spector's Wall Of Sound and the X Factor on the Rolling Stones’ first run of Andrew Loog Oldham produced hits; a masterpiece of Softpop/Sunshine Pop/Superpop, with their Garage roots showing all over the place, and Jack's magic touch bringing it all together. Amazing stuff! Rev-Ola. 2006.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded at Morrisound Recording, Tampa, Florida.
Obituary: John Tardy (vocals); James Murphy, Trevor Peres (guitar); Frank Watkins (bass); Donald Tardy (drums).
Obituary Cause Of Death Songs Cause Of Death Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews quintessential death metal what makes 'cause of death' so special is how instrumental is it. john tardy's vocal are absolutely brutal, but he picks and choses his spots - leaving plenty of space for the music to breathe.

You will find yourself airdrumming. But the guitar sound.. Absloutely still amazingly brilliant to listen to now on any day of the week anytime at all..once you put it on you have to listen to the rest of the album as a lot of the songs flow together..It's the ambient starts and the fact that you can hear every word of the growl. You will find yourself airdrumming. But the guitar sound/ the tone is the thing////// Submitted by http://2bbk.blogspot.com (Cardiff/Cwmbran, Wales, Uk, Earth.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Classic Death Metal Album That Will Never Die... This has to be one of the greatest death metal CD's ever released! This is Obituary's 2nd release but's its what really defined "classic death metal." This album features the well known guitarist for hire, James Murphy and his awsome leads. I think James really helped define this bands sound, and it still stuck even when Allen West re-joined the band. This is a very influential band to me and I wish that some day soon they will reform, release another great album, tour and infect america once again. Classic hits: "Body Bag, Chopped in Half, Find The Arise, Cause of Death, Turned Inisde Out" and their cover of Celtic Frost's "Circle of The Tyrants" This is their best release ever so go get infected!!! Cause Of Death songs
$20.09 Gene Clark is the great unsung hero in the story of the Byrds; he was the original group's strongest songwriter, an intelligent and compelling vocalist with a superb instrument, and (arguably) the sonic architect of the group's Dylan-meets-Beatles approach. But while Roger McGuinn and David Crosby generally got the lion's share of the credit for the Byrds' music, and Chris Hillman and even Michael Clarke went on to successful careers as sidemen after the band broke up, Clark never seemed to get out from under the shadow of his early work with the Byrds. While there's a pretty remarkable compilation album (or maybe even a box set) to be culled from Clark's solo career, Set You Free: Gene Clark in the Byrds 1964-1973 does a superb job of pulling together the high points of his work with the Byrds, and sets the record straight on how important his contribution to the band really was. Clark wrote or co-wrote every cut on this disc (except for a cover of Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" that Clark sang on the Byrds' misbegotten 1973 reunion album), ...
| | Webbie Savage Life CD (2005) Edited
Cause Of Death album
$14.65 In the wake of Lil Jon and the explosion of crunk, producer/rapper Trill came onto the scene, first as part of the trio Trillville, and then as label head/producer. In the latter guise, Trill ushers Webbie onto the national stage with SAVAGE LIFE. The young rapper's debut album is a mixture of crunk-style production, gangsta themes, and Dirty South attitude. The complex verbal dance of some rappers is not for Webbie, though. Instead he keeps his flow straightforward and his wordplay concise. SAVAGE LIFE's subject matter will be familiar to anyone who's listened to Trillville or Lil Jon; such perennial themes as women, street life, and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle dominate the album. Though there are guest artists aplenty (Mannie Fresh, B.G., and others) the mixture of sparse beats and Webbie's singleminded, insistent rapping style are what made SAVAGE LIFE a success and a representative snapshot of the crunk sound circa 2005.
Webbie places in the Top Ten cockiest Dirty South rappers of all time and in the Top 20 when it comes to filthiness, but his confidence is genuine and his verbal skills are quick and whimsical if not witty in an ashamed-to-admit-it way. He's love 'em or hate 'em, take it or leave it, and according to the man ...
