(10 Customer Reviews)
Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory, New York, New York).
One of the most important metal bands of the 1980s, Mercyful Fate took the gloom and doom of Black Sabbath, infused it with the faster tempos of Judas Priest, and added the complexity of prog rock. Meshing the sinister riffs and vibrant guitar harmonies of Michael Denner and Hank Shermann with the sterling rhythm section of bassist Timi Hansen and drummer Kim Ruzz, then topping it all off with the ghostly baritone and infamous falsetto of King Diamond, Denmark's renowned Satanic quintet took dark metal to a whole new level. Five-minute gems like "Evil" and "At The Sound Of The Demon Bell" feature enough ideas for two separate numbers apiece, with the band creatively using unexpected rhythmic and dynamic changes and unconventional song structures.
The album's standout is the radical epic "Satan's Fall," which exceeds 11 minutes and only repeats the introductory section twice, with every new movement presenting something new. But even on the short and sweet "Black Funeral," Mercyful Fate make the most of the material. Even if one cannot get past Diamond's Satanic lyrical musings, the band's music makes for a potent listening experience, one that can certainly grow addicting for those who prefer their metal black, heavy, and intricate.
Timi Grabber (bass); Kim Ruzz (drums).
Recorded at Easy Sound Recording, Copenhagen, Denmark in July 1983. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye.
Mercyful Fate: King Diamond (vocals); Hank Sherman, Michael Denner (guitar);

How can you not like this album??? Mercyful Fate are one of my favorite bands because of this album. Not only are King Diamond's vocals top notch, the guitar work is amazing. Because of this album, H. Shermann and M. Denner are favorite guitarist! Submitted by "At the sound of the demon bell" (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classic Heavy Metal Do you like your Heavy Metal with blistering guitar solos and in your face riffs? Then this is an album you surely want to get. Hank Sherman is a shredder while Michael Denner is melodic and universal. Satan's Fall is one of the high points of the album (Metallica did a cover of the first part of this song on their Garage Days Revisited CD) where Hank just shreds on the opening of the song. $15.05 Following the incredible success of his second solo album, and first conceptual undertaking, Abigail, King Diamond set to work almost immediately on his next extravagant adventure in gothic storytelling with 1988's "Them." This time, he inserts himself among the story's characters, which also includes his mother, little sister, a haunted house (naturally), and, more unexpectedly, a batty old grandmother whose return from a long stay at the insane asylum (famously ...

$11.39 Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory, New York, New York).
Widely recognized as King Diamond's solo masterpiece, Abigail is also unquestionably one of heavy metal's greatest concept albums. A passion for dark-themed theatrics had always qualified the work of the man formerly known as Kim Bendix Petersen before this release, and yet his band's debut from two years prior had merely hinted at the conceptual ambitions yet to come. So turn out the houselights, draw the curtains, and listen closely as King Diamond's synthetically altered ...

$16.29 Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory, New York, New York).
King Diamond's first solo effort, 1985's Fatal Portrait, was a transitional album: still rooted in the satanically-bent heavy metal of his former group Mercyful Fate, but already showing signs of the theatrical ...

$15.89 Saul Lubaroff has been playing music for most of his 43 yrs. He played piano at 8 yrs old, viola at 10, and clarinet at 11. In jr. high, the band director needed sax players, and Saul was happy to oblige. Saul's Dad had played Count Basie and Gerry Mulligan records around the house since Saul could remember, and was probably indirectly responsible for Saul's love of jazz.Throughout high school there were many summer band camps, honor band festivals, and private lessons with Dan Yoder, the jazz studies professor at the U of Iowa. After his senior year, Saul was the first recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz award given at City High. At the U of Iowa, Saul fulfilled a life-long dream by playing in Johnson County Landmark, the University's top jazz ensemble. In college, everywhere that there was an open jam session, or a jazz concert, or a place where musicians would gather, Saul was there with his horn. In 1989, Saul hooked up with the band Shade of Blue, where he held down the sax chair until 1996. Saul cut 2 CD's with ...

$16.45 About the CD:I wrote and recorded this CD over several months in 2002. Each song has a personal meaning to me. The songs were arranged in a sequence that is meant to be somewhat chronological. The tracks were digitally recorded using the Linux operating system and Linux software almost exclusively.There is no overall musical style that I can attribute to this CD, so listening to one of the tracks would not give you an idea of how the other tracks sound. Some are instrumental pieces, and some have vocals. Each track is unique, so I'll do my best to describe what each track is about and sounds like. ~~~~~About the Tracks:Scotia. This is a Celtic flavoured instrumental, reflecting my Scottish heritage. There is a really low bass note partway through the track that sounds cool on a really good stereo. buick 8. This is a driving song, but it's not really about driving. Has vocals. Kind of rock and roll. Also has personal meaning to me. I know of no other song with this title. The Road. An instrumental piece. If I had to categorize it, I'd say it was new-age surf-rock. I recorded this song with a certain idea in mind of what it was about, but other people tell me it means something completely different to them. I'd be interested to know from anyone what it means to you. tycoon. Folk song with electric guitar. It's kind of rock 'n' roll too, with some interesting (to me, anyway) time changes. The lyrics reflect my naive ideas about what it might be like to be a billionaire, along with some social commentary. I like the guitar solo. Without You. Keyboard and vocals. I wrote this one on my Korg M1 keyboard. The harmonies took a while to figure out. A regret song. I imagine every songwriter probably has at least one regret song in them. I forgot to incorporate either of the words "fool" or "clown" into the lyrics though. A regret song probably isn't the same without a fool or a clown. Oh well. discovery.Another instrumental, this track is based on one of the first recordings I made using Linux software. It started out as a techno dance beat, bass, and electric guitar track, with my then-girlfriend providing vocals. Somewhere along the way the vocals came out and I recorded new guitar parts and a few keyboard parts that sound like I ...
