Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to respect Deicide's willingness to remain true to their original musical vision. On Serpents of the Light, the band offers fans more of its infamous dark metal, complete with vocal growls from Glen Benton (who also plays the bass), perfectly in-sync dual guitar work (courtesy of Eric Hoffman and Brian Hoffman), and insanely metronome-perfect double bass drumming from Steve Asheim. Although such early-'80s metal bands as Venom and the Possessed helped invent this radically heavy sound, Deicide continue to expand upon death metal's groundwork. Admittedly, Deicide's music and heavily satanic lyrics aren't for everyone. The album's opening title track certainly sets the tone for the rest of the album, encompassing all of Deicide's musical trademarks. What follows is nothing less than a bloody musical onslaught -- you know what you're in for with song titles like "Blame It on God," "Slave to the Cross," "Bastards of Christ," and "This Is Hell We're In." Not music for the faint of heart. ~ Greg Prato

Deicide never disappoints... I remember when I first heard this album about 10 years ago... I was impressed. It doesn't have the greatest production when you compare it to the previous 3 studio albums but a death metal classic nevertheless. All tracks are relentless and satisfying. If You Can't Handle Atheism... Then don't buy this album. If you want the heaviest death metal - you must have this album. Deicide breaks through with just ridiculously aggressive thrashing. Believe The Lie, Father Baker's, The Truth Above, all classics. This album changed my life. Don't believe the lies. Submitted by Fluke (Chicago, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Serpents Of The Light CD music
$13.05 Digitally remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
With a shockingly tight performance and a handful of evil anthems, Glen Benton and company managed to craft a death metal classic with their eponymous debut. Taking their Satanism to a new level of seriousness, Benton was burning crosses into his forehead and desecrating churches to promote this album, something that didn't exactly endear them to the mainstream metal media. While similar (and even weaker) groups were getting hyped up as the leaders of the death metal underworld, this album struck a chord ...

Serpents Of The Light album
$42.05 An intriguing issue of the acclaimed glitter rock group's 2002 release; includes "Obscured" and "People Like Me." 2004, Japanese import.
In the early- to mid-'80s, Hanoi Rocks was the quintessential Sunset Strip hair band -- and they weren't even from southern California. Hanoi Rocks, of course, was formed in Finland, but their trashy, hedonistic, decadent hard rock/pop-metal boogie influenced so many Los Angeles headbangers (including Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses, Warrant, Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, and Poison) that they might as well have grown up next to the Whiskey-a-Go-Go. Although Hanoi called it quits in 1985, their influence on pop-metal remained quite strong throughout the late '80s -- and it wasn't until the Nirvana/Pearl Jam/grunge upheaval of 1992-1993 that their influence started to decline. When the '90s came to a close, it seemed like a safe bet that Hanoi would never see the light of day again, but much to the surprise of die-hard ...
