There was not a bigger, more contagious crossover radio smash in the autumn of 1991 than Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," a song that somehow managed the trick of being both audaciously catchy and subversively coy at the same time. Its irrepressible appeal -- the Jackson 5 sample, the saucy subject matter, the huge anthemic chorus, Treach's phat rat-a-tat flow -- was so widespread, in fact, that it played just as well to the hardcore heads in the hood as it did to the hip-hop dabblers in the suburbs. The beauty of the trio's self-titled full-length debut is that it is every bit as musically accomplished, and every bit as ghetto fabulous, in its entirety as that watershed first single. Naughty by Nature is both a pop and a rap classic that chews up stylistic real estate by the block, easily shifting from an old-school rhyme-off between Treach and Vinnie ("Pin the Tail on the Donkey"), the unflappable "Louie Louie" Vega-produced posse cut "1, 2, 3" (with verses from Flavor Unit compadres Lakim Shabazz and Apache), and the teeth-clinching combative dirge "Guard Your Grill," all of which very much come out swinging from the streets, to the more measured, emotionally developed "Ghetto Bastard," which brings an upbeat but nail-tough point of view to a grim tale of parental and societal deprivation without ever asking for an ounce of sympathy. With the assistance of Queen Latifah's makeshift patois, the trio even brought something of the Caribbean to East Orange with "Wickedest Man Alive." All the tracks are as street as they are club astute, trimming the funk loops with live keyboards and saxophone and sanguine, soulful melodies. A must-have album for fans of East Coast rap. ~ Stanton Swihart Naughty By Nature Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) the start of something big when people first heard o.p.p. nobody could predict how dope these guys would be.they were versitile giving you hardcore, party, and anthem rap.this was just a sample of what was to come. Naughty By Nature
$11.65 Personnel: Naughty By Nature (rap); Dave Bellochio (keyboards); Yossi Fein (bass); 118th Street Posse, Ben Adler, Lynn M. Scott, Dream Hampton (background vocals). Producers: S.I.D. Reynolds, Naughty By Nature. Following on the heel's of 1991's self-titled smash, Naughty by Nature found themselves pressured to make an album that would stand up to their previous work. 19 NAUGHTY III finds them making a valiant effort to do so, and achieving the near impossibl -striking gold twice. Where in `91 it was the ubiquitous anthem "O.P.P.," in '93 it was "Hip Hop Hooray." The album offers several stellar songs that bridge the gap between accessibility and street grit, all executed with a relaxed and seemingly effortless cool. Thanks to DJ Kay Gee's loose, head-bobbing beats, and the juxtaposition of Treach's smooth, melodic flow with Vin Rock's angry spitting ...

Greatest Hits is a strange release. Sure, Tupac Shakur had more than enough hits to make a terrific compilation, but its appearance in the fall of 1998 felt a bit like another opportunity to milk his catalog, ...

Along with Juvenile's 400 Degreez (1998), B.G.'s Chopper City in the Ghetto is among the best albums released by Cash Money Records during its heyday, and the inclusion of "Bling Bling" alone makes the album notable in the context of its time period. B.G. already had several albums to his credit by the time of Chopper City in the Ghetto, which was his first to be released in the wake of Cash Money's ...

| | R Kelly TP.3: Reloaded CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition
Naughty By Nature
$8.99 Personnel: R. Kelly (vocals, rap vocals); Do or Die, Elephant Man, Nivea, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Twista, Wisin, Yandel, Baby (rap vocals). TP.3 Reloaded is thematically opposite to Happy People/U Saved Me. The first hour of the album is mostly about getting rowdy and getting it on, full of some of the clumsiest and lewdest lyrics R. Kelly has written. Funniest of all is the relatively tame "Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend," where Kelly apologizes to his woman for cheating on her, says he didn't mean to cause pain, proceeds to tell her about all about the affair, and in a roundabout way suggests that it's her fault for allowing him to cross paths with her girlfriend. With one or two exceptions, all of these songs are second and third rate by his standard. And then there's the other part of TP.3. In an apparent move to deflect long-running criticisms that his songs have no depth, he has crafted a ten-chapter saga titled "Trapped in the Closet" -- a rolling narrative inspired by radio plays that doesn't contain a single vocal hook. The first five chapters conclude the album. Over a plain arrangement that swells with each rise in the action, Kelly weaves a tangled tale that he says is a "ghetto Desperate Housewives." Its over-the-top dramatics, unlikely actions, and inexplicable non-actions place it closer to Melrose Place. For instance, despite the gun in his hand, the antsy protagonist fails to bail from the heated standoff with his paramour and her on-the-down-low pastor-husband. He pulls a Michael Mancini; he stays put. None of this means that "Trapped in the Closer" isn't entertaining or eventful, even if it's an event mostly due to the maker. These first five chapters made a big impact on radio and spurred lots of debate and analysis, and they'll deflect attention away from TP.3's shortcomings. [Some copies of the album came with a DVD containing the longform video for the first five chapters of "Trapped in the Closet."] ~ Andy Kellman Could anything be more artistically liberating than 30-plus charges of child pornography? R. Kelly probably doesn't think so. Since his 2002 indictment, he has become increasingly prolific, ambitious, and bold (i.e., bonkers). On 2004's mostly excellent Happy People/U Saved Me, he temporarily shed his sex-freak persona, yet he caught heat for the stage production used during a disastrous tour with Jay-Z. Among many other issues, a backdrop of drizzling liquid looked like a golden shower to some people -- in light of the alleged sex tape that circulated -- but Kelly's handlers claimed it was honey. Either way, it became impossible to think that Kelly wasn't, in some way, ...
