With their brawling take on golden-age hip-hop (the drunken yang to Cypress Hill's blissed-out yin?), proud-to-be-Irish-American trio House of Pain could easily have been a tired cliché. However, with acrobatic, learned lyrics and dexterous beats farmed from bop, blues, and deep funk, the L.A. band of Everlast, Danny Boy, and DJ Lethal turned out to transcend predictability. While best known for "Jump Around," the frenetic sing-a-long that surprised even the band itself by becoming a #3 pop hit, the threesome's 1992 debut offers a vast array of styles ranging from the sly, hazy "Shamrocks & Shenanegans" to the sinister "House of Pain Anthem" to the sweetly lively "Top O' The Morning To Ya." It's an album that ushered in an era of a thousand suburbanites drinking malt liquor, wearing U.S. Postal Service caps, and reawakening their Irish (or in some cases pseudo-Irish) heritage. And it's also the debut album that ushered House of Pain into the forefront of rap culture for a brief period of time. While it's unfair to expect a whole album's worth of quality material like the dynamite classic "Jump Around," there are some strong points on their eponymous debut that emulate the single's strength. Admittedly, there is a significant amount of filler and the topics du jour aren't exactly the most original in hip-hop, but the impact of such songs as "Jump Around," "Shamrocks and Shenanigans," and "Put on Your Shit Kickers" more than makes up for the filler. A debut for a group that showed immense promise that sadly wasn't fully realized. ~ Rob TheakstonRolling Stone (10/29/92, p.70) - 3.5 Stars - Good Plus - "...With a groovy swagger, this collection of hard-core hip-hop tracks offers many moments of technicolor snap and crackle..." Q (12/92, p.124) - 3 Stars - Good - "...their music is of the dense, hard-hitting school of hip hop...the group have absorbed black rap's musical lessons and create a satisfying platform for their above average deliveries..." The Source (9/92, p.57) - 3.5 Stars - Good Plus - "...a very solid and at times exceptional album...imagine if LICENCED TO ILL wasn't an upper middle class Jewish thing but rather a working class Irish thang...the atmosphere is like that of a cross between a frat party and a bar room brawl..." NME (Magazine) (11/7/92, p.34) - 6 - Good - "...contains some creative and accomplished rap music..." House Of Pain Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) no enough credit!!! House of Pain is one of the illest hip-hop groups to ever jump on the scene.I hate it when they get called a one-hit wonder because of "Jump Around". That just show's that mainstream is not ready, or will it ever be ready, for hip-hop. In fact, "Jump Around" is the weakest song on the whole album. Much respect to Everlast, Danny Boy and DL Lethal for putting out aan album that represents my culture. HIP-HOP CULTURE! Submitted by catracho90250 (Los Angeles) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still Jumping! A must have for all hip hop fans. Whatever direction they went after this one still doesn't negate the fact that this album boasts one of the best summer anthems that ever cam out. Submitted by beta_carrier (Buffalo, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

House Of Pain
$10.35 House Of Pain: Everlast, Danny Boy O'Connor (vocals); D.J. Lethal. Additional personnel: Guru, Sadat X, Divine Styler, Cockni O'Dire (vocals). Recorded at Ameraycan Studios, North Hollywood, California. House Of Pain's third album is a murky, nightmarish soundscape that curls around the listener like a cloud of pot smoke. The minor-key synth chords and simple, bass-heavy beats provided by D.J. Lethal, and the rough, husky voices of Everlast and Danny Boy O'Connor paint a picture of grim urban desolation, as eerie as it is urgent. House Of Pain employs none of the tongue-twisting vocal gymnastics and erratic phrasing that are staples of modern hip-hop. Rather, Everlast and O'Connor come off like groovy stormtroopers, declaiming with a brutish immediacy and rhythmic simplicity that connect like a kidney punch. Guests Guru ("Fed Up" remix) and Sadat X ("Heart Full Of Sorrow") expand the sonic horizons of TRUTH CRUSHED with their sinuous contributions, but the bottom line here is the unvarnished ...

Recording information: Image Recording, Los Angeles, CA; Studio 4 Recording, Philadelphia, PA. Photographer: Michael Paul Miller. Arranger: Muggs. It's hard enough to transform an entire musical genre -- Cypress Hill's eponymous debut album revolutionized hip-hop in several respects. Although they weren't the first Latino rappers, nor the first to mix Spanish and English, they were the first to achieve a substantial following, thanks to their highly distinctive sound. Along with Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, Cypress Hill were also one of the first rap groups to bridge the gap with fans of both hard rock and alternative rock. And, most importantly, they created a sonic blueprint that would become one of the most ...

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
House Of Pain
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that ...
