| | ESPN Presents: Jock Jams Vol. 1 CD (3 Customer Reviews)
Jock Jams includes a full dozen of the best arena rock anthems of all time, including original versions of "Get Ready for This," "Whoomp! (There It Is)," "It Takes Two," "Gonna Make You Sweat," "Pump Up the Volume," "Y.M.C.A.," and "The Power." Unfortunately, the ultimate stadium exciter of all time -- "Jump" by the Movement -- is nowhere to be seen. ~ Keith Farley Hot on the heels of the smash-mouth rock anthems of JOCK ROCK VOLUME 1 comes the hi-NRG slam-dunk of JOCK JAMS. From the opening bell and the trademark "let's get ready to rumble" declaration of ring announcer Michael Buffer, JOCK JAMS delivers a hearty dose of dance tracks that range from hip-hop (Naughty By Nature's "Hip Hop Hooray") to house beat (Black Box's "Strike It Up"). If JOCK ROCK was for athletes, JOCK JAMS is for the cheerleaders on the sidelines. Tommy Boy Records goes on the road to pull up regional favorites from as far south as Florida--for the 69 Boyz's Luke-inspired "Tootsee Roll"--and as far north as New York City--for K7, whose clever use of baseball-leaning double entendres makes "Come Baby Come" a risque invitation to play ball. Since dancing is an international activity, Germany's 2 Unlimited ("Get Ready For This") and Snap ("The Power") line up alongside Belgium's Technotronic ("Pump Up The Jam") and Britain's EMF ("Unbelievable"). Then, all these DJ gems are brought home by Gary Glitter's old fave, "Rock And Roll Part 2" (aka "The Hey Song"). OREMI was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best World Music Album. Afro-pop star Angelique Kidjo's last album of the 1990s is her best yet. Titled Oremi, which means "friends," her fifth album is a tour de force with many great collaborations, including hip-hop star Kelly Price ("Open Your Eyes"), Robbie Neville, Cassandra Wilson (the duet "Never Know"), and Branford Marsalis. Oremi is the first CD in a proposed "American" trilogy exploring the connections between African music and R&B. The album begins with a reinterpretation of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," perhaps the best cover of his material ever. Oremi, however, is not simply a stylistic album; higher consciousness and political sentiments are here too, especially with the impassioned plea in ...
| | Richard X Heyman Basic Glee CD (2002)
ESPN Presents: Jock Jams Vol. 1
$9.65 Originally released independently on Permanent Press Records, 6/21/02. Solo perfromer: Richard X. Heyman. Contains 14 tracks. Basic Glee was recorded at Tabby Road Studio, the living room of Richard X. Heyman and his wife, Nancy Leigh. The insert photo of the artist amidst his electronics, guitar, keyboards, and cat on a chair is real "underground rock" imagery. The liners state that the basics to more than double the songs on Basic Glee's 14 tracks were "cranked out at a 24-track studio over one blistering weekend...." Heyman gives the world more of his over the top power pop on this outing, taking the ...
