No one could expect 1987's Join the Army, the long-awaited follow-up to Suicidal Tendencies' quintessential self-titled debut, to live up to its predecessor, but few expected it to be this disappointing. Except for a few bright moments such as "Possessed to Skate" and "War Inside My Head," the album is badly written, badly played, and terribly produced. There could have been many reasons for this fiasco, but considering the renewed quality of the following year's How Will I Laugh Tomorrow opus, perhaps the most likely is that Join the Army was a transitional album in the transformation of the band's sound from hardcore punk to thrash metal. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

The band incorporates a little more metal influences on this one and includes "Possessed to Skate." ~ John Book

Recorded at Record Plant, Hollywood, California, in January, 1987.

Suicidal Tendencies: Mike Muir (vocals); Rocky George (guitar); Louiche Mayorga (bass); R.J. Herrera (drums).

Producers: Lester Claypool, Suicidal Tendencies.

3 stars Updating my CD collection
I owned this on record, then cassette and now CD. Ill tell you what though, without all the surface noise and low quality clutter you may find on tapes and records, its lost its edge. ST should rewrite this album with today's technology. The songs are still good, but its just not heavy at all. No Punch! My 15 watt Marshall practice amp has more tone then the guitar produced on this album. Back in the day this album it kicked butt and with the right production still can. Keep your tapes, unless you find a great deal on this album.

5 stars Waning!! May cause moshpits!
Man this'one cool disk! In my point of view S.T. is one of the most underrated punk-metal or thrash bands around!! The songs on this slab simply rock, rattle and thrash thier way into any real metalheads heart and soul. The production suffers SLIGHTLY, turn it up loud it still sounds great. It really is a 5 star cd when you consider that this'just a bunch of street guys from Venice with no money to even cut a professional sounding album. It is an early masterpiece from a GREAT band!

4 stars Most under rated Punk Metal band ever!!
This while not one of Suicidial's best is still a very good album. Sure it suffers a little from a cheap production. But lets face it tape noise never has and never will be music to any right thinking individual's ears! This brings me to somthing Cronos of Vemon said about some fans complaining about them {Vemon} remastering thier cds and improving the sound (because it so called "took away from the music")He saided " if they like (that) sound better than they can always stick their heads under water while listen to the cd." This brings me back to JOIN THE ARMY. If you like tape noise with your music you can always (don't try this at home kiddies!!!) stick a wet penny in a light socket while listening to it!! If not buy the cd turn it up loud and enjoy one of the most under rated punk metal bands ever!

The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality. Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On ...

Arguably Suicidal Tendencies' finest, and certainly most adventurous, album, 1990's LIGHTS CAMERA REVOLUTION features little in the way of the Los Angeles-based band's brash hardcore roots. Instead, it opts for an inventive thrash-metal-influenced sound, as best revealed on the opening mini-epic, "You Can't Bring Me Down," which presents frontman Mike Muir at his furious best, and showcases ...
