After the tour wrapped up for their 1986 release I AGAINST I, the Bad Brains succumbed to one of the many break-ups of their lengthy, on-again/off-again career. When they reunited by the late-'80s and signed to the independent Caroline label, many wondered if H.R.& company could recapture their past glories. As it turns out, the break didn't dull the quartet's energy in the slightest, as their metallic-punk classic QUICKNESS makes clear. As with most Bad Brains albums, the opening track, "Soul Craft," is a vicious one, soon followed by such other similar hard-edged romps as "Voyage into Infinity," "With the Quickness," and "Silent Tears." As with past releases, the band dips into more melodic territory ("Yout' Juice") and reggae ("The Prophet's Eye") with ease.
Recorded at Media Sound, R.P.M. and Souns On Sound, New York, New York; Quantum Sound, Jersey City, New Jersey.
Bad Brains: H.R. (vocals); Dr. Know (guitar); Darryl Jenifer (bass); Earl Hudson (drums, background vocals).
Additional personnel: Ron St. Germain, Ray "Chinna" Shim, Dave "Famine" Hahn, John "Squidly" Joseph, Chuck Treece (vocals); Mackie (drums).
Bad Brains Quickness Songs Quickness Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews with the quickness personally, i think this is the brains' last great studio album. it's more metal than anything in their past. even though the soul brains(their new monicker) still rock the ass off, i think this recording represents their peak in studio albums. this release is a must. You must be crazy How could you say Rise is better than this? Bad Brains without HR and Earl is NOT Bad Brains. You are obviously not a fan of the classic material that was so important to the development of hardcore punk and not a fan of Bad Brains. Rise was musically tight but it still doesn't count as a true Bad Brains album. Besides, Quickness was musically a lot tighter than a lot of the earlier material that was purposely raw (all members were accomplished musicians, but when you are trying to emulate bands like the Sex Pistols you don't try to show it TOO much). Although I prefer the earlier material this album has some great songs on it. Submitted by Dave (Jersey City, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Quickness This album besides I Against I has to be one of my favorites. With a mixture of punk, heavy metal, reggae, and some jazz fusion and HR's elastic vocal chords you won't be able to turn it off. If you are a true Bad Brains fan you must own it. THIS IS NOT RISE I bought this album after listening and enjoying their Rise release. This is not Rise. The engineering is obviously lacking. Furthermore, it is much more sophomoric. Submitted by a reviewer (Virginia Beach, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

$13.89 Since 1997, the rock songwriter and performer Chris Barber has used the combination pseudonym and band name SPIV. He claims he came upon the word on a random trip through the dictionary, a time-honored way of naming a combo. One motivation to establish another name might have been to avoid confusion with the older British trombonist, bandleader, and all around man about jazz of the same name. While a jam session between the two of them might have its moments, the younger Barber is no swinger and rock music in general has come a long way from the rudimentary skiffle sound that is an important part of the background of the older man. "Brit-pop voodoo" is Barber's own choice of label for his projects. This sounds logical for someone who was raised in Salt Lake City, with a mother who actually took banjo lessons from Jerry Garcia.Barber began playing professionally in punk rock bands when the scene for that style in Utah began, later becoming the material for the film S.L.C. Punk. After high school, Barber sought the more sympathetic ...
| | Fade Out Fade In CD (1964)
Quickness album
$13.95 Originally released on ABCS (OC3). Includes liner notes by Rick Ward, Jule Styne, Peter Filichia.
The 1964 Broadway musical Fade Out - Fade In seemed to have an unbeatable creative and performing team, including veteran songwriters Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green along with emerging star Carol Burnett. Burnett -- who had debuted on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress five years earlier and since made a name for herself on television as a co-star of The Garry Moore Show (but was not yet a TV legend in her own right) -- was given a star vehicle in the show, set in 1930s Hollywood, and a strong supporting cast that featured stage veteran Jack Cassidy, comic actor Lou Jacobi, and soon-to-be TV star Tina Louise. The show sold tickets when Burnett was in it, but she wasn't in it for long, and accounts differ as to why. Burnett claimed to have suffered whiplash in a taxicab, but a court that later forced her to fulfill her commitment to the show (after she had signed a lucrative, long-term TV contract) didn't buy that explanation. What is clear is that she began to miss performances, and the show thereafter disappeared, never to be revived, with a cast album that went out of print and was only reissued on CD close to 40 years later. On the cast album for Fade Out - Fade In, Comden and Green turn in the occasionally witty lyric in their often sarcastic style, and Styne (who was writing Funny Girl at the same time) seems to have done adequate work. It's Burnett and, to an extent, Cassidy who make the album worth hearing. ~ William Ruhlmann
Musical theater historians always get a kick out of discussing failures such as Fade Out - Fade In, the 1964 Broadway musical that seemed to have an unbeatable creative and performing team, including veteran songwriters Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green and emerging star Carol Burnett.
