Earth Moving was one of the last installments in Mike Oldfield's series of pop experiments, and the record does sound as if the musician was running out of patience with the genre. Many listeners have written off this period, but there were interesting moments that passionate fans still appreciate. Oldfield commits completely to the pop/rock format on Earth Moving by excluding the kind of long intro piece that he often used to kick off other '80s recordings. Instead, the composer puts a sprawling but focused (by Oldfield standards) eight-minute number, "Nothing But/Bridge to Paradise," at the end of this 1989 release. The musician/composer displays a more deft pop hand throughout this offering, which probably isn't such a good thing. The quirkiness of discs like Crisis is exactly what makes them interesting. Unfortunately, songs like "Hostage" are so conventional, they sound unimaginative: almost -- no, exactly -- like bad '80s soundtrack numbers. Not just casual fans, but even Oldfield loyalists will have trouble with Earth Moving, one of the artist's lesser albums. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Earth Moving
$11.65 For Islands, Mike Oldfield gathered a host of musicians to further his run of more mainstream-sounding albums. The album includes vocals by Bonnie Tyler, Kevin Ayers, and Max Bacon, as well as saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft (famous for his work on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"), along with the album's producer and former Yes member Geoffrey Downes. Even with such talent, Oldfield only garners sporadic instances of entertaining music, and the bulk of Islands comes off ...

| | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Earth Moving
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Earth Moving
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Earth Moving
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of ...

Earth Moving
$14.79 Formed in 1999 this power trio from Idaho merges a reggae-laced mix of smooth and flowing funk rock into a potent cocktail of addictive grooves. Melefluent took over the local music scene in North Idaho with the release of their first studio album “Leap Before You Look” in 2004. Local success paved the way to a rigorous tour schedule over the next two years with an average of 170 shows per year in 26 states including Alaska. “Ways to Create,” the band’s sophomore effort, is a birth of everything from a little honky-tonk slide shuffle titled “Bum Song” to some good ol’ rockin’ reggae feel in “Fine Women and Wine.” The album ...
