The two Martin Denny albums that gave the exotica style its name and popularized its sound, originally released circa 1957, are here combined onto one compact disc. If you want more Denny after you're finished with Rhino's best-of, this should be the next stop. Only seven of the 24 tracks here duplicate the Rhino set, Denny wrote the extensive liner notes, and the sound is better than what you'll find on the beat-up original vinyl. The earlier album (featuring "Quiet Village") is jazzier and more boisterous than you might expect; Exotica, Vol. 2 is considerably mellower, and heavier on the cocktail lounge vibe. ~ Richie Unterberger Exotica as a genre didn't last much beyond 1964, but it didn't disappear without leaving behind a few marks of genius, one such being the work of Martin Denny. His EXOTICA, and the follow-up recording, EXOTICA II, were postcards from a world far beyond suburban, post-war America. Denny's music staved off a little of the nation's cultural hunger. He was also one of the finest band leaders and arrangers around, one of maybe three from the Exotica genre to have displayed enough skill and irony to avoid scorn from pop music historians.Uncut (p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "These two albums were revolutionary, integrating Hawaiian and African rhythms into lounge bar arrangement alongside birdcalls and ambient noises." This was one of the most stunning debut albums of the 1980s. Given the domination of synthesizer pop on the radio, Melissa Etheridge was a breath of fresh air when she burst out of the gate with this roots rock album sung with a sensitive bravado often compared to Janis Joplin. Although the passionate vocal deliveries are similar, the comparisons end there: Etheridge is a Midwesterner who was clearly influenced by classic rock artists such as Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp. The main theme explored is the emotional complexity of relationships, and throughout the album she sings about the hunger for affection, the pain of unrequited love, and the fire of obsessive romance.
