This is where Strife finally hit everything just right. Their sound is big and full, yet almost clinically tight; the tempos are brisk, sometimes headlong. Singer Rick Rodney bellows in the time-honored hardcore punk style, utterly incomprehensible and completely compelling on songs like "Blistered" and "Stand as One (Redemption)." The lyrics are still strangely vague -- the songs are all adamant, but not always about anything identifiable (lines like "The future is dead for many of those who have fallen refusing to let it go" and "Search inside and you will find the answers lie within the reach of those who try" are long on emotional resonance and short on specific meaning). But that doesn't make the music any less powerful. "To an End" may be one of the most galvanizing hardcore rants ever committed to tape, and everything else on this remarkable album is almost as good. A stunning achievement. (Caveat emptor: the disc begins with three minutes of horror-movie sound collage and ends with another sixteen minutes of the same thing, which means that it only contains 28 minutes of actual music.) ~ Rick Anderson

Electric Prunes: I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)
Electric Prunes: I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) CD  (1967)

CD $10.69  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
As the throbbing buzz of Ken Williams' tremolo-laden fuzztone guitar creeps from one side of the stereo spectrum to the other, the Electric Prunes kick off their debut album with their first (and biggest) hit single, and if Electric Prunes: I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) never hits the high point of its title track again, the next 11 songs confirm that these guys were in the first echelon of American garage bands of the '60s. In the grand tradition of most garage rock albums, the best tracks on this disc are the singles, which along with the title track include "Get Me to the World on Time" and the surprisingly effective B-sides "Luvin'" and "Are You Loving Me More (But Enjoying It Less)," but the other tunes are more than just filler. On nearly every song, Williams and fellow guitarists Weasel Spagnola and Jim Lowe spin a web of gloriously strange sounds, making the most of a battery of stomp boxes, and bassist Mark Tulin and drummer Preston Ritter provide a solid, percolating backdrop for their faux-psychedelic soundscapes. Producer David Hassinger would in time become a bad guy in the Electric Prunes' story, but on these sessions he gives them a great studio ...

Empty Houses Are Lonely
Tom Brosseau Empty Houses Are Lonely CD  (2006)

In This Defiance CD music
CD $13.05  Audio Samples
It's nice to know that you don't have to be tough to be a rock star. Not that what Tom Brosseau is playing on Empty Houses Are Lonely, or any of his records for that matter, is rock music, but the fact that Brosseau can sing songs of heartbreak and love in his fragile, whispering falsetto and sound completely legitimate is still pretty impressive. In fact, Brosseau's strength is that he willingly explores and admits his weaknesses, nearly exploiting them and himself so as to bring emotion, and maybe even catharsis, to his audience. "Heart of Mine" is inconsolably tragic and depressing, with Brosseau's quavering voice singing "heart of mine you stole from me, didn't you?/I don't want it back where it don't belong, it's not my property." He's utterly miserable, and everyone knows it. At the same time, however, Brosseau manages to retain a bit of dignity, or at least irony: he's not completely pathetic. "Soon my heart will whither and die/what will you do with it then my dear?" he affirms at the end of the song, coming close to kind of self-deprecating last laugh. Brosseau's sincerity and his ability to describe a situation with small details work well with his simple guitar chords and melodic lines. He's clearly inspired by the storytellers of old-timey and traditional country ...
Celtic Journey To The Path
Jim Goodin Celtic Journey To The Path CD  (2000)

CD $11.39
Composer-guitarist Jim Goodin travels through the passages of influence of many spirits in his music including the sadly missed Michael Hedges, Ralph Towner, minimalist composer Steve Reich, Irish bard O'Carolan, the weird brilliance of Bill Frisell and the beautiful, haunting music of jazz pioneer Bill Evans.

Jim's beautiful CD, Celtic Journey to The Path, was released in October 1999."Stream of consciousness" - Tom Salvatori, Lullaby Music "Jim Goodin writes with sincerity. His music haunts while it paints beauty. Jim is in no hurry. He perfects his craft and plays in the moment. He does his "own thing"and that's the beauty in his art. You'll discover that Jim does not sound like other players. Its really fresh and original." - Rob Lunte, guitarist "I think your music ...

Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park
Justin Rutledge Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park CD  (2006)

In This Defiance CD music
CD $12.39
Justin Rutledge comes from the same musical family as Kathleen Edwards, Blue Rodeo, and Ryan Adams with his simple, relaxing, and strong songwriting. Adams instantly comes to mind during the opening moments of the midtempo, pedal steel-accented "Robin's Tune." From there, Rutledge rarely rocks the boat when ...
