(1 Customer Review)
Long before they found their calling as a highly technical thrash metal band, New York's Prong was dealing in rather faceless hardcore, most of which didn't hold a candle to superior scene rivals like the Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front. Sure enough, their modest independent debut, Primitive Origins, is a collection of mostly uninventive two-minute blasts, which prove that the sometimes CBGB employees still had something to learn before quitting their regular jobs. A few songs ("Watching," "Cling to Life," "Dreams Like That") do show occasional promising flashes of things to come, however, and may interest serious fans. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| Primitive Origins Music Review Purchase Primitive Origins CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Suicidal Tendencies Join The Army CD (1987)
Primitive Origins album
$9.19 No one could expect 1987's Join the Army, the long-awaited follow-up to Suicidal Tendencies' quintessential self-titled debut, to live up to its predecessor, but few expected it to be this disappointing. Except for a few bright moments such as "Possessed to Skate" and "War Inside My Head," the album is badly written, badly played, and terribly produced. There could have been many reasons for this fiasco, ...
| | Overkill Under The Influence CD (1988)
Primitive Origins CD music
$10.39 Originally released in 1988, Under the Influence is another confident, if unremarkable Overkill recording. Highlights include the punk-ish "Overkill III (Under the Influence)," as well as trademark pseudo-thrash numbers like "Shred," "Never Say Never," and the minor hit single/video "Hello From the Gutter." One subtle, but very consistent problem with Overkill's brutal riffing sticks out just a little bit more than usual on Under the Influence. That is, the clanky ringing and exaggerated attack of bassist D.D. Verni's instrument. Verni bogs down the group's sound, weakening Overkill's otherwise tight and unified rhythmic signature. As usual, the real problem with Under the Influence is vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth's overdone vocals. Ellsworth ...

| | Prong Scorpio Rising CD (2003)
Primitive Origins songs
$9.49 The gritty guitars, the stop/start rhythms, the anger and the vicious ill will are all back in Prong's Scorpio Rising. Now, who forgot the songs? Minus the hooks, Prong just gets by on their ferociousness, keeping their return album from being a total washout. Eight years without a studio album made the hardcore itchy with anticipation, and for them, Scorpio Rising might be just volatile enough. With the album, Prong's sound has become slower. It's sludgy but with quite the rumble underneath. Tommy Victor's voice has dropped in pitch too, becoming a roaring howl that's darn near otherworldly. The opening "Detached" holds plenty of promise, but one rumbling number after another with nothing to grip on to weakens the overall punch. With a bluesy beat, "Entrance to the Eclipse" gives the listener a much needed break from the stomping, but the ...
| | Black Sabbath Dio Years CD (2007) Remastered
Primitive Origins album
$10.99 THE DIO YEARS focuses almost exclusively on tracks--sterlingly remastered--from the abovementioned records, but also includes "Children of the Sea" from LIVE EVIL and a few from the 1992 reunion flop, DEHUMANIZER. The real surprises of THE DIO YEARS are "Shadow of the Wind," "The Devil Cried," and "Ear in the Wall," three new songs recorded by Sabbath with Dio shortly before the compilation's release. THE DIO YEARS is a great start for casual Sabbath fans looking to get in a little deeper or for Dio fans looking for his great Sabbath moments in one place.
While certainly not as long, prolific, or influential as the Ozzy Years, Black Sabbath's stint with Ronnie James Dio merits more than a mere footnote in the band's storied history, and Rhino's THE DIO ...

| | Cannibal Corpse Butchered At Birth CD (1991) Bonus Tracks; Enhanced CD
Primitive Origins songs
$9.69 In the early '90s, Cannibal Corpse acquired a small cult in the death metal underground by embracing some of the most gruesome lyrics the subgenre had to offer. Thriving on shock value, the band inspires comparisons to GWAR and comes across as a parody of death metal and grindcore more than anything. Like its previous album, the equally twisted Eaten ...
