For completists, specialists and academics, Document's Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1929) is invaluable, offering an exhaustive overview of Charley Patton's early recordings. For less dedicated listeners, the disc is a mixed blessing. There are some absolutely wonderful, classic performances on the collection, but the long running time, exacting chronological sequencing, poor fidelity (all cuts are transferred from original acetates and 78s), and number of performances are hard to digest. The serious blues listener will find all these factors to be positive, but enthusiasts and casual listeners will find that the collection is of marginal interest for those very reasons. ~ Thom Owens

| Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1929) Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Most Interesting Music Ever I am 23 and Have been listening to Delta Blues since I was 12. This man knows his life, surroundings, voice and most of all, he knows his guitar. "Mississippi Boweavil Blues" is by far the most complex. One guitar is being played, but you could swear up and down that two are because this riff is so quick, yet smooth. I must insist that any young music listener start paying attention to Delta, especially if you like rap. Street Rap is today's Delta Blues, just this time rappers are showing how bad black society has become since the time of the Delta. You may think it has changed, but THINK AGAIN!. Delta Blues Rules! | | Bamboleo Ya No Hace Falta CD (1999)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1929) music CDs
$13.85 One of the best-known groups on the crest of the timba wave, a new style mixing salsa with funk and jazz elements emanating from Cuba's streets, Bamboleo stays on the cutting edge with 1999's Ya No Hace Falta. Having stepped into international notoriety with Yo No Me Parezco a Nadie in 1997, the pressure was on to deliver to their newly won fan base. With smooth arrangements and a drum-tight band, Bamboleo had no trouble making good on their reputation, and if anything, they raised the bar for the entire genre. Both the horn section and vocalists have a cool, suave approach that contrasts the lightning-rod-hot sound of similar groups like Charanga Habanera or NG la Banda. This smoky, jazzy sensibility juxtaposed against the sharp corners of the super-funky rhythm section makes for an easy, pleasurable listen. ...
| | Night Train, Vol. 3: Classic Railroad Songs CD (1998)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1929) songs
$14.29 Trains were a major industrial force for over a hundred years in America. Starting around 1830, they became key components in how the country moved goods, people, and information across previously unimaginable distances. They also provided themes and metaphors for popular songs and music, many of which also drew underlying structure and dynamics from the chug-chug and clickety-clack rhythms of a train in passing, while horn players and harmonica wizards worked to simulate the blast of the steam whistle on their instruments. As a metaphor for arrivals and departures, as proof for deliverance to a better place, the train was a strong signature in the Afro-American musical community. This interesting collection from Rounder Records underscores the role of the train in that regard, full of train-like rhythms and the use of the train image to convey all manner of social connections, from deliverance to release. Muddy Waters' "All Aboard," for instance, an early variation of a folk song that would eventually emerge as "Mystery Train," mimics the chugging sound of a train pulling into a station, complete with harmonica fills that stand in for a train's whistle. Henry Thomas' "Railroadin' Some," recorded in 1929 and the oldest piece compiled here, is nothing less than a litany of train stops punctuated by Thomas' cane fife blasts. Song after song here draws on the sound and thematic possibilities of the train, and as the 21st century chugs forward, the train becomes a perhaps even more potent image, conjuring the past and where and what we've been even as it pulls out of the station toward some uncertain future. ~ Steve Leggett

| | Aron Burton Live CD (1996)
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1929) album
$15.19 Veteran bassist Aron Burton, after nearly four decades as a greatly in-demand sideman in the blues world, finally put together his own band in the early '90s. This CD, his third recording as a leader, is very much a blues revue in the spirit of Johnny Otis. Burton sings on six of the 13 songs, sharing the vocal mike with guitarist Michael Dotson, keyboardist Allen Batts, drummer Kenny Smith, the fine harmonica player Lester Davenport and (on extroverted versions of "Fever" and "Hound Dog") Liz Mandville-Greeson. Instrumentally, Burton sounds quite happy to liberally feature his sidemen and play a supportive role. Although all of the players fare well, each one displaying a strong musical personality, the high-powered guitarist Dotson often takes honors, demonstrating that he is a highly expressive and up-and-coming bluesman. Whether it be warhorses or newer material, the Aron Burton show keeps moving and never loses one's interest. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
"Aron Burton Live stands with the best of them. With the exception of two studio tracks, the album was recorded live last year at Buddy Guy's Legends, and features guest appearances by harpist Lester Davenport and vivacious vocalist Liz Mandville Greeson. Vocals are spread amongst the band members, which is appropriate because Burton's avowed goal is to present a blues revue that puts the spotlight on all the stage talent. Aron Burton Live is a sterling example of just how good Chicago blues can still be..." -Illinois EntertainerBIO Aron Burton has been hard at work for the past fifty years, securing his place in musical history as a master of the blues, and becoming one of the most sought-after bass players in the business.
