The second in a 4 CD series of reissues featuring Memphis Minnie and her husband/recording partner, Kansas Joe McCoy. Minnie takes 11 vocals, Joe does 8, and they duet on 4.
Document's Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1930-1931) reissues 23 sides from Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe, including classics like "Memphis Minnie-Jitis Blues," "Frankie Jean (That Trottin' Fool)," and a version of "Bumble Bee." Still, the lengthy running time, poor sound quality, and all conspire to cut into the collection's casual listenability of this compilation. ~ Thom Owens
Includes liner notes written by Alan Balfour.Living Blues (1/92-2/92, p.59) - "...Volumes 2 shows Minnie and Joe at the peak of their powers; their guitar work was brilliantly played and solidly within the Memphis guitar duo tradition, their songs were mostly strong and proud statements based on country themes and symbols, and they sang with a power and intensity already starting to disappear from the blues of artists with longer tenure in Chicago..." | | Guy Davis Give In Kind CD (2002)
Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1930-31)
$14.09 Guy Davis has developed into a consummate bluesman. He's listened hard to classic Delta blues and based his style on it, without ever becoming a carbon copy of the greats. Instead they're his jumping-off point into something as individual as "Layla, Layla," where didgeridoo makes an appearance, or the poignant "Joppatowne." Equally adept on guitar, banjo, and harmonica, he's become a force of nature, with the ability to write a song ...
| | Memphis Slim Come Back CD (2002)
Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1930-31)
$13.29 Like John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim was very much a label-hopper -- from the '40s to the '80s, it was safe to assume that the singer/pianist wouldn't stay at one label for too long. In the '50s, Slim did some of his best work for United, a Chicago-based indie whose catalog has since been acquired by Delmark (another Windy City label). Slim's United period of 1952-1954 is the focus of The Come Back, a 20-track collection that Delmark assembled in 2002. This is a blues CD that has both jazz and rock appeal. Slim, like Jimmy Witherspoon and T-Bone Walker, was always a very jazz-influenced bluesman -- his love of jazz comes through on vocal gems like "Call Before You Go Home" and "5 O'Clock Blues" as well as free-spirited, improvisation-minded instrumentals that include a previously unreleased performance of Arnett Cobb's "Smooth Sailin'." The jazz influence gave Slim's band a certain ...

| | Muddy Waters Chess Box CDs (1990)
Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1930-31)
$28.09 HE CHESS BOX covers Muddy Waters' career from 1947 through 1972. It features some previously-unreleased tracks, and many others previously unreleased in the U.S. The box includes a 32-page book with a complete discography of Waters' Chess recordings, track-by-track recording information and black-and-white photos.
Principally recorded in Chicago, Illinois between 1947 and 1972. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin and Robert Palmer.
During the '40s and '50s, Chicago's Chess Records recorded a legion of blues legends. But none were greater than McKinley Morganfield, professionally known as Muddy Waters. Though born and raised on the Mississippi delta, Waters came to personify the brash, confident blues that blossomed in Chicago and Memphis in the post-war era. Between 1947 and 1972, Waters cut an uninterrupted stream of brilliant sides for Chess, the best of which are included on the three-disc CHESS BOX.
To call these recordings indispensable is merely to state the obvious. Any one ...
