One of the most popular and prolific of the blues performers who recorded for Bluebird during the late 1930s and early '40s, Washboard Sam is heard on his greatest hit during this collection, "Diggin' My Potatoes." The 24 selections were recorded during three busy eight-song sessions that fell during a ten-month period in 1939-1940. Sam alternates between good-time pieces and more threatening blues, swinging throughout. Although his instrument, the washboard, was associated with music of a decade earlier, Washboard Sam's music fit the urban blues mainstream quite well. Altoist Buster Bennett (who switches to soprano on "Oh Babe") sounds a bit like Pete Brown and hints at jump music and early R&B. He works well with Sam, as does guitarist Big Bill Broonzy, a constant on many of Sam's recordings. Whether it be "This Time Is My Time," "Somebody Changed That Lock on My Door," "Beauty Spot," and "She Fooled Me," Washboard Sam sings about the universal topics of love desired, lost and found. Fun music. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1939-40.
Personnel includes: Washboard Sam (vocals, washboard); Big Bill Broonzy (guitar); Buster Bennett (alto saxophone).

$15.15 The third in a series of four CD reissues containing the complete Imperial Records recordings of Rick Nelson combines his fifth and sixth albums with his five singles from the same period, November 1959 to May 1961. The story told here is one of musical exploration, as Nelson's early success as a teen heartthrob who liked to play Sun Records-style rockabilly faded and he began casting around for other approaches to maintain his popularity. After the relatively ...

I'll try to answer some of those questions right here, right now.(By the way, for those who don't know, a "Browncoat" is a fan of the short-lived but much-loved television show Firefly and the movie that grew out of it, Serenity, both created by Joss Whedon, the mind behind such media hits as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Toy Story. You can read all about it at http://www.scifi.com/firefly/ )Hawke and I decided to record an album of music inspired by Firefly and Serenity because we thought it was a sound business proposition. *snort* Whoo, if you believe that one, you're an easier mark than Simon Tam. I've got a land deal on Shadow for you . . .Nah, the truth is that my muse became a Browncoat. Despite ...
