Washboard Sam had a long and lengthy recording career and this volume zeroes in on the period of activity from July 1942 to October 1949. Recording in the company of Big Bill Broonzy, Roosevelt Sykes, Ranson Knowling, Willie Dixon, Bob Call, and Ernest "Big" Crawford, highlights include the unissued "Down South Woman Blues," "You Can't Make the Grade," "Soap and Water Blues," "No. 1 Drunkard," "Nothing in Rambling," and "Gamblin' Man." Sam tended to stick within a limited framework but the man had a groove, no two ways about it. ~ Cub Koda

| | Rick Nelson Ricky/Ricky Nelson CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 7 music CDs
$18.79 True fans of early roots rock & roll are likely to sneer at Ricky Nelson. With little to run on but his teen-idol good looks and his high-profile popularity from his starring role on OZZIE AND HARRIET, Nelson started making records at 17 years of age. Though he didn't show an overwhelming amount of talent at the outset, he proved a quick study, and even his very first album, RICKY, has some strong moments. The fare is rockabilly-styled pop, and while it clocks in hipper than Pat Boone, it doesn't touch the hem of Elvis Presley ...

| | Rick Nelson More Songs By Ricky/Rick Is 21 CDs (2001) Import
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 7 album
$15.15 The third in a series of four CD reissues containing the complete Imperial Records recordings of Rick Nelson combines his fifth and sixth albums with his five singles from the same period, November 1959 to May 1961. The story told here is one of musical exploration, as Nelson's early success as a teen heartthrob who liked to play Sun Records-style rockabilly faded and he began casting around for other approaches to maintain his popularity. After the relatively disappointing performance of a pair of singles, "I Wanna Be Loved" and "Young Emotions," ballads that peaked only in the Top 20, he made More Songs by Ricky, an album that found him attempting to update decades-old standards like "Time After Time" and come up with brass-heavy production numbers in emulation of then-popular Lloyd Price. As annotator James Ritz writes, the best way to appreciate the results is to "take everything he had already done musically and throw it out the window," but even ...
