Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 6: (1936) songs
$12.95 This series on Acrobat is generally credible but occasionally stretched to the breaking point. There are a couple of cases here where that happens, to be sure, but for the most part there are plenty of solid shakers and quakers on this 20-track set. Louis Jordan is here, as are Tampa Red, Earl Hines, the King Cole Trio, and many of the WWII-era big bands burning through some R&B-oriented stompers swing style. Lil Green is also here with her big hit "Let's Be Friends," and a few hard driving moments from Duke Ellington and Bea Booze with the original "See See Rider Blues." But Paul Whiteman? Barney Bigard? Jimmie Lunceford? R&B? Uh uh. There's plenty of great stuff here, but there are some utterly bad choices as well. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Joy Division Closer CDs (1980) Collector's Edition; Digipak
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 6: (1936) album
$22.25 CLOSER is the second and final album by Joy Division, arguably the most influential U.K. band of their generation. Arriving just months after lead singer Ian Curtis' suicide, it stands as a fragile document of one man's despair, as much as a definitive statement by a band at the height of their powers. While Joy Division's much-lauded debut, UNKNOWN PLEASURES, demonstrated their transformation from shambolic punks into a tight, highly focused quartet, CLOSER cemented their status as musicians at the vanguard of modern rock. Introducing a more vibrant and expansive sound palette--adding mournful pianos and funereal strings--the album is a sprawling, poignant last chapter of a band that seemed, at the time, to have unlimited potential for greatness.
Whereas UNKNOWN PLEASURES' interplay of light and shadow was daubed in contrasting layers of chiaroscuro, ...

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 6: (1936) music CDs
$12.15 Dub Terror is a London-based music project specializing in bass-heavy lethal dubplates and futuristic riddims production. It's conceived and operated by Italian producer Dubstudent who has partnerships with the biggest names of the UK reggae and dub circuit. 2005 sees Dub Terror release its first single on Neil Perch's Deep Root label, featuring UK reggae veteran Tena Stelin on the A side and Dub Terror inflammable cocktail on the B side. Musik bombs on Babylon!! Dub Terror hits hard...
Dub Terror is the brainchild of Italian dub producer Simone Lombardi, who does most of his studio work under the name Dubstudent. On his first full-length album he teams up with instrumentalists from around Europe and Asia along with a variety of reggae vocalists to create a brilliant and vibrant collection of modern reggae and dubstep compositions, about evenly divided between instrumentals and vocal numbers. Lombardi's signal achievement--apart from his winning way ...
