Stovepipe No. 1: Complete Recorded Works (1924-1950) & The Jug Washboard Band (1928) album for sale Product Description
Stovepipe No. 1: Complete Recorded Works (1924-1950) & The Jug Washboard Band (1928) album for sale by Stovepipe No1 was released Sep 08, 2000 on the Document label. The strangely named Stovepipe No.1 accompanies himself on guitar, harmonica, and stovepipe; the latter homemade instrument functions like a jug, providing a higher pitched and, under Stovepipe's direction, more versatile sound than its cousin. The solo recordings of Stovepipe No.1 are primarily of interest for the unique repertoire they represent, consisting of typically "white" dance tunes, such as "Turkey in the Straw," "Fisher's Hornpipe," and a melody of "Cripple Creek and Sourwood Mountain." Also included are two religious pieces; of these, "Lord, Don't You Know I Have No Friend like You" is a relation of the Carter Family's "This World Is Not My Home." With guitarist David Crockett, Stovepipe delves briefly into minstrel and medicine show material, producing the unusual title "A Chicken Can Waltz the Gravy Around." Although these unconventional recordings make interesting and important footnotes in the history of Southern rural music and the "race records" industry, only Stovepipe's collaborations with King David's Jug Band, also included here, hold much appeal to the general listener. These six performances represent some of the finest sides of early jug band music, the stovepipe itself (filling the role of the jug) reaching a new level of virtuosity. ...See Full Description

Paramount Piano Blues 1928 - 32, Vol. 1 CDs (1991)
Stovepipe No. 1: Complete Recorded Works (1924-1950) & The Jug Washboard Band (1928) CD music The Black Swan Record label's overview of Paramount recordings from the late 1920s through the early '30s filled half-a-dozen discs that are well-worth investigating. Three of these were designated as piano blues collections, and the first installment features the work of Little Brother Montgomery, Charlie Spand (paired with Blind Blake), and Skip James mingled with equally solid offerings from Blind Leroy Garnett, William Ezell, Louise Johnson, who shares the "All Night Long Blues" with Son House, and Bob Call, who backs vocalist James "Boodle It" Wiggins on the "Evil Woman Blues." Both neophytes and seasoned old-time blues lovers will thrill to the inclusion of rarer recordings by Jabo Williams, Charles Avery, Wesley Wallace, Lonnie Clark, and Henry Brown. Since this Black Swan series first appeared in the early '90s, the Yazoo, Document, and JSP labels have vastly increased the ready availability of this wonderfully honest and uncontrived music recorded long ago by engineers working for Paramount Records, a division of the Wisconsin Chair Company. ~ arwulf arwulf

Shout, Brother, Shout: 1950's R&B From The Legendary Trumpet Records Label CD (1994)
Stovepipe No. 1: Complete Recorded Works (1924-1950) & The Jug Washboard Band (1928) buy CD music This Alligator trip into the Trumpet archives has unearthed this R&B collection. These artists were then (1951-1954) learning about changes in their previous musical circle and trying to find ways to fit them into the music. Label owner Lillian McCurry tried an end run on racial stereotypes by pairing a white hillbilly/country singer with a black jump band. Sherman "Blues" Johnson & His Clouds of Joy blended R&B with conventional blues shouting. Perhaps the CD's finest music comes from Willie Love & His 3 Aces. Love, swaggering, demanding, accusing and declaring the way things are going to be, brings some fire and heat to the proceedings. The set has authoritative liner notes and excellent sound, plus 22 cuts. ~ Ron Wynn

Sing My Blues Tonight CD (1998)
Stovepipe No. 1: Complete Recorded Works (1924-1950) & The Jug Washboard Band (1928) album for sale This first volume in Westside's exploration of the blues treasures from the original Jackson, Mississippi-based Ace label yields a treasure trove of unreleased gems. Only five of the 25 selections have seen release before, either on original Ace 45s or on album. Culled from various sessions, these tracks feature tracks from Floyd Dixon, H-Bomb Ferguson, Amos Milburn and Charles Brown. An extra bonus is that all of the tracks here by Floyd Dixon and the majority of those by Charles Brown reveal crude, but effective, stereo recordings from the late 1950s, a treat for the ears, combining the old sound in a new format. This compilation is simply a jump blues aficionado's dream. ~ Cub Koda
