This finds Josephine Baker at the dawn of her music career, recording in France with various backing groups. While some of the later cuts emphasize the over-emoting chanteuse she eventually became, the early sides come closer to real jazz, even if the backing groups lack rhythmic pizzazz. The most interesting tracks here are her version of "Dinah" and her solo efforts (on which she accompanies herself on ukulele). If you're only used to hearing Baker singing in French and doing bombastic show tunes, this set will come as a revelation. ~ Cub Koda

| | Preston Shannon All In Time CD (1999)
Complete Recorded Works: 1926-27
$29.09 Although regarded by some as a blues artist, Shannon is a practitioner of classic '70s-style Memphis R&B, and ALL IN TIME is the kind of greasy, soulful album that had become far too much of a rarity by the time the '90s rolled around. The blues element comes in via Shannon's guitar work, trenchant and aggressive in the manner of Albert King. His thick, powerful solos weave their way through arrangements by famed Memphis producer Willie Mitchell.
With Mitchell's horn-driven production ...

Complete Recorded Works: 1926-27
$12.65 Bio From deep within the heart of Colorado comes Roe, a Denver based piano-rock band whose sincere musical anthems and passionate vocals tell stories of honesty, ambition and heartache. Mixing poignant piano melodies with up-tempo rock and clever lyrics, Roe's musical prowess has quickly taken Colorado listeners by storm. Their heartfelt songwriting and unique style of piano rock makes Roe a band to look out for in the near future. Roe was formed in early 2006 when long time pianist and vocalist Jake Espy met up with the bass stylings of Nick Daniluk. The two had an ambition to blend Espy's piano driven influences with Daniluk's jazz and rock roots. Soon after their meeting, Espy and Daniluk cycled through a few guitarists but finally settled on David Anderson, as well as drummer John Breeding to complete the quartet. Using Espy's material as a framework for the newly formed group, and consummate musicianship from the other three members, Roe dove head ...
| | Low-Country Messiahs Biscuit Palace CD (2006)
Complete Recorded Works: 1926-27
$13.15 The Low-Country Messiahs is the musical project of Sub Pop recording artist Green Magnet School alumni Robert Hamilton. Hamilton plays a hybrid form of raw country blues using open tunings and bottleneck slide on acoustic and cigar box guitars. The music has been characterized variously as primitive rock, ambient blues, and alt-country."The Low-Country Messiahs don't sound like your typical bar band," writes the Boston Herald. "Of course if your typical bar is nestled in Mississippi hill country, then perhaps they would fit right in ... [they] find their muse in the haunting sounds of cult juke joint favorites such as Junior Kimbrough and the raw, unschooled sounds of Robert Pete Williams ... but the Low-Country Messiahs aim for a quieter, more ominous sound ... raw, plaintive, brooding, atmospheric tunes."Borrowing stylistically from Delta blues, hokum, ...

The bandconsists of two members: Mick O’Connor, a Londonnative transplanted in Brooklyn, covers synthesizersand vocals; and Tara Striano, a native New Yorker, takes vocals.Born in a time of both geo-political and global economic maelstrom,TPLOR brings the topics of our time to song via a mixture of analogsynthesis, topical texts, and humor.
