$15.75 The prototype jug band, Will Shade's Memphis Jug Band mapped out a street-corner litany of blues, rags, and pop standards from the late 1920s through the mid-'30s, most of them for Victor Records. This fourth volume in David French's Frog Records' survey of the MJB's output collects sides they recorded for Vocalion and OKeh in 1934 as well as presenting alternate takes and test pressings done for Victor between 1927 and 1930. What's important here is that the remastering for the series was done by John R.T. Davies, which means these cuts sound as good as you're ever going to hear them. ~ Steve Leggett
25 tracks including "Peaches In The Springtime," "Stealin' Stealin'," "Jazzbo Stomp," "Gator Wobble," and many more from the complete Vocalion & OKeh recordings plus unissued Victor ...
| | Best Of Old School Players CD (2000)
Complete Recordings, Vol. 2 (1929) music CDs
$13.89 Best of Old School Players is a egregiously misleading. While the songs themselves are some of the finest electro and bass records of the '80s and '90s, these are not original recordings, but rather renditions done by studio musicians and session vocalists. Songs including J.J. Fad's "Supersonic," ...
| | Funkin' The Ghetto CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Complete Recordings, Vol. 2 (1929) songs
$26.29 It's the vaults of Prestige that have been the focus of many soul-jazz and acid jazz reissues, but it should be realized that recordings in that style were being made all over the place. This smartly selected compilation of soul-jazz-funk-fusion done for Atlantic between 1967 and 1977 serves as evidence. Its focus is split between some of the more fusion-esque commercial efforts done by artists most known for straighter jazz (Roland Kirk, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Harris, Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann), R&B notables with jazz leanings (King Curtis, Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers, Fred Wesley), and quite a number of obscure artists whose work is rarely, if ever, reissued (Lottie Golden, Southshore Commission, Natural Bridge Bunch, Clarence Wheeler, Black Heat, United 8). This isn't quite the best compilation of this sort of music, but it's pretty good, demonstrating that meshing jazz with wah-wah funk guitars and soulful organs (or the other way around) can make decent music. Still, it's closer to quality background party sounds than flights of inspiration. Highlights to consider include Roland Kirk's bouncy "Making Love After Hours," with a downright danceable jazz blues riff and rocking flute; Roy Ayers "Daddy Bug," which catches him at a point where he might have been more palatable to pop audiences than most vibists, but had yet to bleed into disco; and Natural Bridge Bunch's "Pig Snoots (Part 1)," with its ridiculously ...

| | Rough Guide To Chicago Blues CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Complete Recordings, Vol. 2 (1929) music CDs
$13.79 Ah, the Chicago blues. While it very much has its own identity, developed from the '30s on, it's the direct descendent of the Delta blues of Mississippi, gussied up in city clothes and given a bit of a polish -- but never too much of one. The Rough Guide to Chicago Blues compilation proves to be one of the best at uncovering the city and its style. Most of the big names are here -- Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Otis Spann, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, John Lee Hooker, and others (although, curiously, no Howlin' Wolf). But it also goes a bit below the surface and comes up with far lesser-known, but equally good, names like John Littlejohn and Johnny Jones & Billy Boy Arnold, making for something that's satisfying and more than just the obvious. It also illustrates that Chicago was more than just gutbucket harmonica and driving electric guitar -- although there's plenty of that, too. But piano was equally important, as shown from the ...
