| | Memphis Jug Band, Vol. 4 CD (2007)
Complete Recordings, Vol. 3 (1929-1930) CD music
$15.75 The prototype jug band, Will Shade's Memphis Jug Band mapped out a street-corner litany of blues, rags, and pop standards from the late 1920s through the mid-'30s, most of them for Victor Records. This fourth volume in David French's Frog Records' survey of the MJB's output collects sides they recorded for Vocalion and OKeh in 1934 as well as presenting alternate takes and test pressings done for Victor between 1927 and 1930. What's important here is that the remastering for the series was done by John R.T. Davies, which means these cuts sound as good as you're ever going to hear them. ~ Steve Leggett
25 tracks including "Peaches In The Springtime," "Stealin' Stealin'," "Jazzbo Stomp," "Gator Wobble," and many more from the complete Vocalion & OKeh recordings plus unissued Victor tests. Artists include Will Shade, Vol Stevens, Jennie Clayton, Ben Rame

Complete Recordings, Vol. 3 (1929-1930) CD music
$6.09 With its major-label bow, Living Well Is the Best Revenge, demand grew for Midtown's 1999 debut EP, Sacrifice of Life, which had fallen out of print after its initial 3,000-piece pressing. While the band did update the release's cover art, sonically it's a straight reissue. Sacrifice of Life will be an interesting artifact for Midtown fans, as its five tracks ...

| | B B King Spotlight On Lucille CD (1991)
Complete Recordings, Vol. 3 (1929-1930) songs
$15.05 On SPOTLIGHT ON LUCILLE, B.B. King closes his mouth and lets his significant other speak for him. Featuring a dozen instrumentals recorded in 1961 and '62, this set finds a still-young King further developing his sound into the instantly recognizable trademark it would soon become. Listening to these tunes, you can hear him drawing from such diverse influences as Robert Johnson, Django Rheinhardt and Charlie Christian. But you can also hear the elements that were already influencing the next generation in Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.
Backed by a swingin' rhythm section and potent horns, King and Lucille explore the territory where the blues becomes rock & roll. From the medium shuffle of "Blues With B.B." and "King Of Guitar" to the up-tempo "Jump With B.B" to the Basie-esque "Powerhouse," these tunes offer a glimpse of a legend in the making, performing in a unique situation. And through it all, Lucille speaks ...
