| | Rashied Ali Ny Ain't So Bad: Ali Plays The Blues CD (2000)
Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Vol. 4 (1931).
$14.65 From the first in a series of obscure reissues by the Knitting Factory label, this Rashied Ali-led session from 1975 is exactly what it says it is, a blues date featuring the unusual, deep soul vocals of Royal Blue, who comes off styling his blues from the T-Bone Walker school of Texas blues crossed with the voiced passion of a Big Joe Turner and the clarity of speech that comes from Joe Williams with Count Basie. The Rashied Ali Quintet is the backing band, which featured Charles Eubanks on piano (and he is a truly amazing blues pianist), James Vass on alto sax and flute, Benny Wilson on bass, Marvin Blackman on tenor and flute, and, of course, Ali on drums. The tunes are all smoldering late-night and medium-slow blues. This is odd considering a two-horn front line, but it makes perfect sense in this setting. Ali, not content to play the straight fours the blues require, shuffles everything, syncopating each instrumental passage by triple and even quadrupling time so as to appear in synch with the rest of the band. Royal Blue's semi-sung, semi-shouted, low-key vocals are replied to, line for line, by Eubanks, whose capacity to underscore his words and add emphasis -- like a choir responding to a preacher -- is astonishing. These lyrics are fraught with feeling anyway, and given ...
| | Roy Buchanan Deluxe Edition CD (2001) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Vol. 4 (1931).
$15.25 Digitally remastered by Brian Jensen & Bruce Iglauer (MonsterDisc, Chicago, Illinois).
The third non-crossed licensed anthology from the master guitarist focuses on his three-album stint at Chicago's blues-based Alligator Records. The artist considered the music he made during his 1985-1987 association with the label the most honest of his career. Since he received complete creative control on these discs, his 1988 suicide, a short year after Hot Wires -- one of Roy Buchanan's best albums ever -- was released, makes his untimely death even more shocking. With its 16 tracks -- two previously unreleased -- almost evenly divided between instrumentals and (predominantly) guest vocals shared by Otis Clay, Delbert McClinton, and Johnny Sayles (Buchanan tentatively and gruffly talks/sings three selections), this is not only a terrific overview of the musician's astounding guitar virtuosity, but a sad coda to a short yet intense career that never broke him through to a wide audience. "You know I ain't broke, but I'm badly bent" are not only lyrics to "Ain't No Business," but also the sad state of affairs the artist found himself in as he was recording his final disc. With a completely unique guitar style that effortlessly shifted from a crying moan (as in the opening bars) to his cover of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" to a raging howl -- exemplified by the thumping take on Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover" -- Buchanan effectively covered all the blues-soul-rock bases with passion, integrity, and class. His economy of ...
| | Johnny Drummer Unleaded Blues CD (2001)
Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Vol. 4 (1931).
$15.19 Johnny Drummer, a fine vocalist and composer, wrote 12 of the 14 songs on this CD. His singing is soulful and the music goes far beyond blues into R&B, soul, pop/rock, and modern folk music. Most of the selections are taken at slow-medium tempos and many emphasize minor chords. The backup group is fine (with plenty of guitar solos), but the main spotlight is on the leader. Since Drummer crosses many stylistic boundaries, this set is definitely not for blues purists, but it is well-worth checking out by most other listeners interested in these genres. ~ Scott Yanow
Chicago, that veritable university of the blues, has graduated another bluesman; this time from the department of the South Side. Singer-songwriter Johnny Drummer (Thessex Johns) has thrown this sophomore hat into the blues ring in celebration. This effort similar to his Earwig debut, It's So Nice; finds Johnny out there and on time with his South Side soul blues degree. Perhaps with a stronger blues flare and Chicago flavor, Drummer delivers another powerful set of music; penning eleven of thirteen tunes in this can. Johnny has spent decades honing his vocal chops singing behind the likes of the Aces (Dave Myers, Louis Myers, and Fred Below) and whereever else he could climb astage. He bided time, developing his songwriting, and perfecting his soft and illustrious tenor voice. Drummer and Earwig's relationship with him have brought to light another shining star from the Chi-Town firmament. Earwig's Michael Frank steps up and calls Drummer a "songwriter under a groove"; a prodigious writer we should hear plenty more from! Johnny has nothing but pros ...
