Despite the change in labels, Crowbar's fifth album differs only imperceptibly from past releases -- Odd Fellows Rest is as thick and slow as molasses, with titles like "...And Suffer as One," "December's Spawn" and "Behind the Black Horizon" clear tip-offs that the group takes itself way too seriously. ~ Jason Ankeny

Odd Fellows Rest
$12.95 This is the album that started it all for Twisted Sister. With the group's classic lineup complete and producer Pete Way (of UFO and Waysted fame) at the helm, TS put to wax its early club material and in the process came up with one of the greatest hard-rock debuts ever.
"What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," with its hypercharged metal riff, has been the band's concert-opener for years. "Bad Boys (Of Rock 'n' Roll)" is a testosterone-fueled singalong with a great hook and lead guitar lick. "Shoot 'Em Down," which received some airplay upon release, features the furious riffs and anthemic qualities that would characterize much of the band's material through the years. "Destroyer" is as heavy as heavy gets, while the title track was singled out by Tipper Gore's P.M.R.C. for being about sado-masochism and bondage (in reality, it's about guitarist Eddie Ojeda's throat operation). "I'll Never Grow Up Now!" is a rebellious teen anthem of independence. UNDER THE BLADE is for all die-hard metal aficionados and for those fans only familiar with "We're Not Gonna Take It."

| | Trooper Hot Shots CD (1980) (Import) Canada
Odd Fellows Rest
$14.25 Dishing out playful songs with freewheeling lyrics, all built around slapdash guitar were Trooper, one of Canada's biggest bands from the mid- to late '70s. Hot Shots is a splendid 12-song assortment of this groups best offerings, bar none. Taking off with the chugga-chugga guitar pulse of "Boys in the Bright White Sports Car," this best-of epitomizes a band that really knew how to have fun. "Baby Woncha Please Come Home" reveals some startling harmonica playing, while ...
| | Jeremy Wall Cool Running CD (1991)
Odd Fellows Rest
$11.15 Jeremy Wall is best known for his years with Spyro Gyra, which grew increasingly formulaic and predictable as the 1980s progressed but was still exciting back when the pianist/keyboardist contributed such memorable tunes as "Shakedown" and "Mallet Ballet." Some might have feared that Cool Runnings would be full of boring elevator jazz, but the CD is actually fairly decent. Though not mind-blowing, light and atmospheric pop-jazz offerings like "Ancient Words," "Key West Strut" and the Latin-flavored "Into the Sunset" aren't nearly as contrived as most of the studio recordings Spyro was coming out with at the time. Wall's writing clearly reflects his years with that band, although Joe Sample's influence is also prominent. The player could have done without the pointless background vocalists he sometimes employs (none of whom add anything to the material), and he does tend to overproduce and overarrange. Nonetheless, Cool Runnings indicates that from a creative standpoint (as opposed to a commercial or monetary one), Wall's departure from Spyro was probably a good thing. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Westlife Coast To Coast CD (2000) Import
Odd Fellows Rest
$11.65 The 2000 album from the Irish boy band sensations conquered Europe with this former No.1 LP. The first single 'My Love' helped Westlife tie a record with the Beatles for having 7 consecutive #1 hits in a row (in the UK)! This re-released version adds 3 tracks more than the original: 'Uptown Girl' (from a Comic Relief benefit single), 'I Have A Dream' and 'My Girl'.
This reissue of the hit album from Irish boy group Westlife features 3 additional tracks: "Uptown Girl," "I Have A Dream," and "My Girl."
Westlife's debut album was like an appetizer at Jean-Georgs, compared to the fast-food boy band music shoveled out on 99-cent menus. Their sophomore album, Coast to Coast, brings about that feeling of being overstuffed by a fancy main course and being offered dessert. At that point the quality of food doesn't matter as much; you're ready for the check. Even the Mariah Carey duet sounds rehashed -- is the best she would offer them a remake of her own remake of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds"? As was the case on their first album, the production quality is spectacular, so crystal clear that it makes the immaculate production of pop albums from just the last few years sound murky. The vocal talent here is powerful too -- bet your life savings that when the group fades into oblivion at least one of them will be jolted to higher fame. It is a familiar sight -- the trend that began with Take That, then shifted to Boyzone, then grasped by Westlife (who were mentored by Boyzone's Ronan Keating). It is as if the same group just keeps being reincarnated, but their age stays the same -- perhaps this is the United Kingdom's version of Menudo. While the money-minders of the record labels may not have a vision that extends much further from their earnings, their strategies have not artistically been in vain. Forget claims by those who pick favorites due to nostalgia. The music has only gotten better with each group. That is why, coming from a most promising cast of talent, Coast to Coast is so disappointing. It is stitched together with more of the same ("Angels Wings" is highly reminiscent, not in name only, of "Flying Without Wings"). Big, sweeping productions with graceful "oohing" and "aahing" choirs supplying the lead singers with atmosphere does sound exquisite, but it only goes so far when every song sounds like the last one. Whoever spends as much time getting the production quality just right has neglected to insist that the production sounds varied throughout. The songs are also not as memorable as in their previous work because the writing is so concentrated on one subject and sound. For evidence, notice how a later, stylish track, "Loneliness Knows Me By Name," kicks life into the album after a long, monotonous series of songs. "My Love" ...
