No, War to End All Wars isn't a Molly Hatchet album, the Frank Frazetta cover painting notwithstanding. It's Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force's 2000 album on Spitfire, which also finally gave Malmsteen's '90s output a proper U.S. reissue release at about the same time. The fleet-fingered Swedish guitar god plays all the electric and acoustic guitar parts on War to End All Wars, of course, and he also plays bass and sitar. And, for better or worse, he writes all the lyrics. His supporting players include vocalist Mark Boals, keyboardist Mats Olausson, and drummer John Macaluso. War to End All Wars is packed with Malmsteen's jaw-dropping, neo-classical, light-speed guitar shredding, and the three instrumentals are arguably the best tracks. (Face it, nobody listens to a Malmsteen album for the vocals, and Boals' operatic wailing wears thin after awhile.) "Molto Arpeggiosa" is the highlight and the track's foundation, oddly enough, is the rigidly spry bass riff; never fear, for Malmsteen quickly unleashes the rockets in his fingertips. His impossibly fast soloing on "Preludium" and "Instrumental Institution" is supported by the keyboards and drums. "Prophet of Doom" comes complete with Queen-like harmonies. The mid-tempo hard rocker "Bad Reputation" includes Malmsteen's self-defensive lyrics. "Masquerade" has a sleeker '80s-like feel and Malmsteen does as much riffing as soloing. The acoustic guitar-tinged "Miracle of Life," which seems inspired by his new life as a husband and father, has the broadest range of musical dynamics on the album. "Wild One" is rooted in speed metal and the lyrics cleverly weave past Malmsteen song titles. Given Malmsteen's love of Ritchie Blackmore, you'd think the U.S. bonus track "Black Sheep of the Family" is a Rainbow cover, but it's not. It's a playful, reggae-based studio jam. ~ Bret Adams
Recorded at Studio 308, Baroque & Roll and White House Studios, Miami, Florida.
Personnel: Yngwie Malmsteen (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, bass, gong, background vocals); Mark Boals (vocals); Mats Olausson (keyboards); John Macaluso (drums).

War To End All Wars Music Yngwie Malmsteen War To End All Wars Songs War To End All Wars Music War To End All Wars Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Among Yngwie's greatest This album is great. People complain about the production quality, I think it adds to the heavy and brutal sound of this album. People complain that Yngwie never does anything different, here it is, something different.
This album is great from start to end (with the exception of Black Sheep of the Family.)
Notable tracks are Prophet of Doom, Crucify, Tarot, and War to End All Wars. Another great one is The Wizard, which is like a new verion of Merlin's Castle.
This album is definately worth the money. Submitted by Adrian ("USA") Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What Is This Junk?? I will say I grew up in the 80s listening to this guy and I love most of his music through the years. This however; is horrible. Terrible production, very muddy sound and just all around not good. Very big let down. I've never heard anything this bad from Yngwie or naybody else. I don't really know what else to say. This is just bad all the way around. Check out his other CDs and save your money on this one. Submitted by nightwing32j (Flowood, MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This CD is a mustfor guitar players Despite what the critics said about this album, I think this is one of Yngwie's best albums to date. This is coming from a guitar player that plays Neo-Classical material, the mixing could use a little work but seeing him perform these songs live made me purchase both the U.S. version and the Japanese version at his shows (for the bonus tracks). My personal favorites are "CRUCIFY", "MASQUERADE", "THE WIZARD", "THE WILD ONE", and "TREASURE FROM THE EAST"(Japan only). I think an opinion from a fan says more than what a critic has to say because he being paid for it. So if you appreciate the power of Malmsteen, I highly recommend this album Submitted by a reviewer (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
8 out of 14 ain't bad! Okay, so the production is lacking. The guitar parts (except solos) are basically...bassy. The drums are a little tinny. Mark Boals is overpowered by it all (but his voice is recorded just fine -- how bad was Trilogy's sound?). The problems are minor in their degree, though. It's not like you can't hear Mark Boals singing, or can't tolerate the drumming, or can't make out Yngwie's riffing. It just could have been better. That said... I love listening to most of this album. Crucify is awesome, as is War To End All Wars. The three instrumentals here are very nice, still, Asylum Suite on the Alchemy album is MUCH better. Tarot and Catch 22 are catchy. Bad Reputation is really catchy, also, surprisingly. But don't get me wrong...Prophet of Doom is also good, just not top-list (love the Paganini reference). Wild One is okay, also, but... it's a song that references a bunch of his previous work (in the lyrics) so it gets a lam-o stamp (sorry). The Wizard gets the "Why did you do that?!?!" for DESTROYING Merlin's Castle. I give it 5 stars for Crucify, War To End All Wars, Molto Arpeggiosa and Instrumental Institution. BTW, I seem to recall, regardless of how he felt about this recording, Mark Boals released a solo album and toured for it around the time of this album's release, preventing touring with Yngwie. Hmm ....not so hot First off, I am a Malmsteen fan but this album falls short production-wise bigtime! The guitar playing is really aggressive which is cool but the production of the vocals and drums is terrible. It sounds like they recorded it in a garage. I am not a big fan of Mark Boals but they really screwed him with the way the vocals were mixed, probably why he left the band right after the album was made. John Macaluso is a god on the drumkit but they made his drums sound very tinny and brash with no tone or depth at all. We know Malmsteen always has top notch players even though they don't stay long, but where are the masterpieces like Facing The Animal and Seventh Sign? Those albums had great songs and great production! Submitted by a reviewer (Bellbrook, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
