| | Johnny Cash Collection CD - Import Johnny Cash Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This pudding, Winston Churchill once famously declared, has no theme. Much the same could be said of this album. It's not really a greatest hits package; in fact, one should take the title literally - it's just a collection of various, unrelated songs Johnny Cash recorded for Columbia between 1963 (the wonderfully ominous mariachi-tinged "Ring of Fire") and 1979 (the cowboy classic "Ghost Riders in the Sky," which Cash renders with such sepulchural dread that you can imagine he's actually seeing the titular phantoms). In between there's the occasional patriotic ditty ("Ragged Old Flag,") a socially conscious protest song ("The Ballad of Ira Hayes") and familiar country hits like "Daddy Sang Bass." In other words, thematic incoherence notwithstanding, lots of terrific music.

Collection album
$10.89 On his first traditional country album since 2004's WHAT I DO, Alan Jackson steps outside the comfortable routine he's created for himself in favor of creating a more personal and introspective work. The first album on which Jackson has written all of the songs all by himself, GOOD TIME is Jackson's most autobiographical album by some distance. "Small Town Southern Man" is a touching farewell to his late father, while "I Wish I Could Back Up" and "Never Loved Before" (a duet with country superstar Martina McBride) are intimate love songs more revealing than most country radio fare. GOOD TIME is true to its title, however; alongside the revealing autobiographical tunes, there are sly, swaggering country-rockers like ...
| | Ray LaMontagne Gossip In The Grain CD (2008)
Collection CD music
$14.09 Rootsy singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne returns with his third album, downplaying the vintage soul vibes of his earlier work in favor of a more idiosyncratic feel rather akin to the sound that Cat Power has achieved with her recent albums. More so than on earlier albums, LaMontagne has toned down the old-fashioned Stax and Motown feel, although there's still a natural bluesiness both in his vocals and in the soulful, molasses-slow arrangements. However, the album's biggest outlier turns out to be its best song; "Meg White," a tongue-in-cheek ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Collection music CDs
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's ...

Other guests include Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John, the only two vocalists here whose careers intersected with Elvis chronologically.

| | Johnny Cash American IV: The Man Comes Around CD (2002) Bonus DVD
Collection CD music
$11.99 "Give My Love To Rose" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Includes a bonus DVD featuring a music video for the song "Hurt".
When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume.
Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings an equal amount of gravitas to old country and folk tunes like "Streets of Laredo" and "Give My Love to Rose." To hear Cash's worn, husky, lived-in voice ...

| | Coralie Clement Bye Bye Beaute CD (2005)
Collection album
$13.49 Tinkling glassware and winking eyes, cruiser bikes and trailing scarves. Coralie Clément's Bye Bye Beauté is just as evocative as its predecessor, the 2002 debut, Salle des Pas Perdus. But this time, Clément and brother/producer/principal songwriter Benjamin Biolay have added chamber pop and joyous electric guitar flourishes to their quiet street-corner line drawings. "L'Impasse" and "Indécise" are well appointed with vintage keyboards and layers of guitar; the latter ...
