Madacy's Rock On 1987 is a 12-song collection of hits both big and small from 1987's pop charts. Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" is the largest hit here, but other dance-pop queens like Samantha Fox ("Touch Me"), Kim Wilde ("You Keep Me Hangin' On"), and Jody Watley ("Don't You Want Me") are represented. The rest of the disc includes some pop from Belinda Carlisle ("Heaven Is a Place on Earth"), modern R&B from Ready for the World ("Love You Down"), and Club Nouveau's pallid cover of Bill Withers' great "Lean On Me." The disc is far too brief to be anything but a random glimpse of the year in music. That and the lack of any classic songs make this one of the weaker entries in Madacy's series. ~ Tim Sendra
Each volume of Excelsior's Rock On series provides an extremely arbitrary snapshot of the year that's being covered. Only 12 songs are on each disc, meaning that a good amount of space goes to waste, and there's little in the way of stylistic focus. Needless to say, these hastily patched-together budget-line discs shouldn't be considered suitable documentations for the years they are covering. Rock On: 1987 includes Wang Chung's "Let's Go!," Samantha Fox's "Touch Me," Ready for the World's "Love You Down," Survivor's "Is This Love," Kim Wilde's "You Keep Me Hangin' On," Club Nouveau's "Lean on Me," and Taylor Dayne's "Tell It to My Heart." ~ Andy Kellman

As a followup to THE RIVER, a double-album blast of old-time rock and roll, this amazing solo-acoustic folk album came out of nowhere in the fall of 1982. More precisely, it came out of Bruce Springsteen's back pocket. He recorded what would become NEBRASKA at home on a 4-track recorder, intending it as a demo tape for a full-band album. The band versions were recorded, but Springsteen sensed something missing; eventually, he became convinced that his demo tape, which he had carried around in a back pocket of his jeans for several days, had a spiritual wallop that he and the band couldn't recreate. He had the cassette cleaned up and turned into his sixth album.

The album NEW YORK CITY, released in 2003 under the name the Peter Malick Group, found Grammy-winning singer Norah Jones joining guitarist Malick for a session of mellow, rootsy blues tracks. Jones's gauzy vocals fit perfectly with the mood of the music, and the album was a success. THE CHILL ALBUM, released subsequently, featured downtempo DJ remixes of NEW YORK CITY's tracks, while THE REMIX ALBUM, another remix treatment of the Jones/Malick project, focused on groove-oriented versions.
THE DELUXE NEW YORK CITY COLLECTION brings together all three albums. A glance at the track list might frighten off those unfamiliar with the albums, since the same six song titles appear over and over across the 31 tracks of the double album. But the DJ tracks are so radically transformed that they may as well have come from a different universe (while still retaining the enticing, relaxed mood of the originals). The set comes recommended to fans of Jones, contemporary blues, and downtempo electronica.
"Here, in the tradition of Billie Holiday was a stunningly beautiful, blues infused voice. This was my first contact with Norah Jones." Peter Malick was not talking about hearing COME AWAY WITH ME for the first time, but about encountering an unknown artist working in the trenches of New York City clubs approximately two years before Ms. Jones's Grammy deluge. Fortunately for Malick, Jones was receptive to the idea of working together on some of his own bluesy material. The resulting sessions, recorded in 2000 and released here as the EP-length NEW YORK CITY, give listeners an opportunity to hear an even younger Jones, one who still sounds impossibly seasoned and very much the self-assured artist.
Malick, who was a teenage protege of blues great Otis Spann over 30 years ago, contributes full-bodied and tasty guitar accompaniment. Though the material and production values on NYC aren't quite up to the standard of Jones's debut on Blue Note, her contribution as lead vocalist justifies the adage "it's the singer not the song," ensuring that this release is worthy of attention.
