| | Rock On: 1989 CD
The concluding volume in Madacy's year-by-year overview of the biggest hits of the '70s and '80s ends the series on a disappointing note: although this retrospective look at 1989 is heavy on blockbuster hits, with no less than four chart-toppers (Bad English's "When I See You Smile," Mike + the Mechanics' "The Living Years," Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and Debbie Gibson's "Lost in Your Eyes," respectively), few of these tracks have withstood the test of time -- thankfully, grunge was right around the corner. ~ Chuck Donkers

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Rock On: 1989 CD music
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is ...

| | Best Of Human Drama...In A Perfect World CD (2000)
Rock On: 1989 music CDs
$10.39 The absolutely stunning In a Perfect World is a generous 16-song "best-of" that cuts out all of Human Drama's weaker moments, bringing John Indovina's most brilliant turns straight to the top and never once putting a single toe out of place. From the opening "Death of an Angel" and the impassioned vocals and rocking guitar scythe of "I Could Be a Killer" on to a kicking live version of "Dying in a Moment of Splendor," in which Indovina, backed by a piano and brushed drums, sounds so sincere as to be laughable but isn't at all, In a Perfect World becomes a potent reminder of just how ...

| | Shakin Stevens Collection CD (2005) England; Remastered
Rock On: 1989 CD music
$11.05 THE COLLECTION is a fine 25-track overview of U.K. rockabilly-pop singer Shakin' Stevens's best material, including the hits "Teardrops" and "Try Just A Little Bit."
While there may not be many Shakin Stevens fans left here at the dawn of the 21st century, there are perhaps enough to take great delight in this double-disc set that collects the British rockabilly artist's many singles -- there are 24 cuts on the CD -- and also includes a live performance DVD. Stevens burst onto the scene at the dawn of the 1980s performing a roots rock style that was in fact both dated and timeless. His readings of Dave Alvin's classic "Marie, Marie" (right after the Blasters' version tanked) and Stuart Hamblen's "This Ole House" became nearly definitive versions as he used his '50s warble combined with a full and rich baritone. Stevens could sing country, blues, R&B, and (of course) rockabilly with equal acumen, as this excellent collection ...
| | Savage Circus Dreamland Manor CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Rock On: 1989 music CDs
$32.79 This first album from German speed metal band SAVAGE CIRCUS features Thomen Stauch, formerly of Blind Guardian, on drums.
Japanese import CD includes one extra song: "Ca Plane Pour Moi."
Dissatisfied with his bandmates' increasingly commercial creative vision, Blind Guardian drummer and founding member Thomen Stauch quietly began work on the side project that would become Savage Circus in 2004, finally making the shock announcement of his defection a year later. After one more year came the first fruits of his bold career move in the shape of Savage Circus' 2006 debut, Dreamland Manor, which boasts a melodic but more involved power metal sound reminiscent of Blind Guardian's "golden" period circa Tales from the Twilight World. Naturally, this means that, so long as they can stomach well-intentioned but frankly recycled formulas from the power metal genre's (admittedly) little-changing mid-'90s aesthetic, disgruntled BG fans will likely love the blast-from-the-past qualities of songs like "Evil Eyes," "When Hell Awakes," and "Born Again by Night." The similarities begin with Swedish singer Jens Carlsson (a ringer for Hansi Kürsch), proceed through the fantastical lyrical themes and anthemic gang choruses, and are completed by warring melodic and riffing guitars and above-average song lengths (circa six to seven minutes, never under five), which allow for extended band interplay without totally losing the plot in progressive metal fashion. ...
