Every major recording artist seems to have some juvenilia in the catalog that has gotten away somehow and gets repackaged endlessly, ripping off fans and making life hard for discographers. In Jimmy Buffett's case, that juvenilia consists of the recordings he made for Barnaby Records in the early '70s. Originally issued on the LPs Down to Earth (1970) and High Cumberland Jubilee (1976), they have also turned up on Before the Salt (1979) and Before the Beach (1993), and are available to any entity that wants to lease them from Celebrity Licensing, Inc., and put out a CD. That's what bottom-feeder bargain label Madacy has done with Collector's Edition: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times, which contains on its two CDs ten of the 11 original tracks from Down to Earth, all of High Cumberland Jubilee, and "Richard Frost," a track first released on Varèse Sarabande's 1998 reissue of Down to Earth; the only track missing is "England" from Down to Earth. (Madacy has also released a version of There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times that contains only the first CD of the set.) It's too bad that tracks from the two albums have been mixed up, because they are quite different. The ones from Down to Earth portray Buffett as a thoughtful folk-rock singer/songwriter of the early '70s, earnestly strumming an acoustic guitar over a rhythm section and singing lyrics of social consciousness with sly references to drugs ("Ellis Dee," "A Mile High in Denver"). The tracks from High Cumberland Jubilee are a bit more ambitious musically, boasting a string section, and they sometimes contain hints of humor typical of the later Buffett. On the whole, there is some good work on this album, but it is not characteristic of the lighter tone Buffett eventually took, and potential customers shouldn't buy it expecting his usual style. ~ William Ruhlmann

5 stars Classic Buffett
I found one of the two cds better than the two however it is classic Buffett, especially if you like his ballads.

3 stars Theres Nothing Soft About Hard Times
While this is a little more country than rock, it is a good CD to listen to. You will not hear these songs on a Buffett tour, and it does not have the parrothead theme, but again, nice to listen to with a margarita in the tiki bar.

Faye Patton - this artist is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose original songs combine jazz, funk, folk, blues and classical influences. Gutsy, fluid vocals that flex and stretch across registers accompanied, often live, by funky, bluesey piano arrangements. Major influences are Ray Charles, Scott Joplin, Junior Mance, Tori Amos,Rachelle Ferrell,Ricki Lee Jones,Herbie Hancock,Kate Bush,Diamanda Galas and Theolonius Monk.TELL ME I'M A SINNERGothic Blues... Fayes original songs of love, loss, passion and inspiration take on a new level of luminosity in this collection which is entirely live, acoustic voice/grand piano. An atmospheric selection of tunes which combine neatly crafted piano arrangments and rich, poetic lyrics. Think... Scott Joplin meets the Brothers Grimm in an enhanted garden ...

Recording information: London Bridge; Superswift Sound.
Art Brut's 2005 debut BANG BANG ROCK & ROLL introduced the South London outfit's brand of bratty, conceptual art-punk. Ironic and arch, while also managing to rock with sincerity, Art Brut sounded like naive, irreverent school kids who were actually smarter than their teachers. It's not a shock that IT'S A BIT COMPLICATED, the 2007 follow-up, doesn't branch far into new territory: to "mature" and "develop" would be against the band's M.O.
Instead, the album delivers more clever, brainy fare suitable for both pogoing and chin-stroking. Singer Eddie Argos applies his wry, biting humor to such topics as break-ups, adolescence, and pop music itself in his Fall-ish half-sung, half-spoken drawl. Meanwhile, the band slams and shuffles behind him with amps cranked, offsetting Argos's ironic stance with a raucous glee and pop smarts. Listeners not charmed by Art Brut's overall concept the first time out (and they are, after all, a concept band) are unlikely to be converted, but fans of BANG BANG ROCK & ROLL should give IT'S A BIT COMPLICATED a well-considered spin.
From Art Brut's first moments, they've been high-concept -- after all, their debut single was about how they formed, and sounded like they recorded it immediately after getting together -- so it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that they've become increasingly meta, or that It's a Bit Complicated tends to feel like it's based on the concept of what Art Brut's second album should sound like. In the wake of Bang Bang Rock & Roll's success, Eddie Argos and company are no longer underdogs, so the band's sound is bigger, bolder, and more confident. There's more distance in Argos' lyrics -- there are no more stories of how long it's been, to the second, since he's seen the first girl he ever loved, or how his little brother ...

Together in various permutations since 1977, Tuxedomoon marked their 30th anniversary by releasing this challenging set of all-new material. Moody post-punk funk, with Kurt Wagnerian song-spiel vocals, pervades the album on tracks like "The Big Olive," "Muchos Colores," and "Still Small Voice." Spacious synth explorations unfold on "Kubrick" and "Epso Meth Lama," and the song "Wading Into Love" is four minutes of delicious, end-credit dub.
Tuxedomoon's continuing career as a thriving self-contained ...
