| | Minutemen Paranoid Time CD Minutemen Discography of CDs
On the very first single from the seminal San Pedro trio, the Minutemen showed off admirable chops and a steadfast hardcore aesthetic, as well as the strong political stance that separated them from most of their hardcore brethren. In the ultra-concentrated style that characterized their early work, the band bashes out seven songs within the space of about seven minutes.
PARANOID TIME hurtles along at a frantic pace. The opener "Validation," crystallizes the early Minutemen style: a scratchy guitar, shouted vocals, and a tight rhythm section adeptly executing a series of quick starts and stops. Before you know it, the song ends and "The Maze" charges in, with insistent bass and choppy guitar chords, and singer d. Boon railing against a target he would return to again and again: dishonest politicians. The ominous "Definitions" starts with Boon speaking over Mike Watt's bass, before bursting into a cathartic shouted chorus of "Tear up your dictionary!" The final four songs are loosely linked by themes of communism: the frantic instrumental "Hammer and Sickle," "Fascists," featuring Boon's caustic guitar work, "Joe McCarthy's Ghost," and the aptly named final diatribe, "Paranoid Chant."
Personnel: D. Boon (vocals, guitar); Mike Watt (vocals); George Hurley (drums, background vocals); Greg Ginn (background vocals).
Recording information: Media Art studio, Hermosa Beach, CA.

Paranoid Time music CDs
$6.09 After a string of over the top '70s albums with high-energy tunes that made Bette Midler a sensation worldwide, she settled down on Broken Blossom. The first song, "Make Yourself Comfortable," sets the pace with a relaxed doo wop style that's hard to resist. There are some remakes on Broken Blossom including a version of Billy Joel's "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with about twice as much pizzazz as the original; the surprising choice of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," from Disney's Cinderella; and "You Don't Know Me," which was previously ...

| | Residents WB: RMX CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Paranoid Time album
$15.05 The Residents have remixed their first album from 1971, the never released Warner Bros. Album. The Warner Bros. Album was the group's first demo tape. They mailed it anonymously (they didn't have a name yet) to Harve Halverstadt at Warner Brothers. Halverstadt was chosen because he had worked with Captain Beefheart, one of the group's musical heroes. The tape was returned with a rejection addressed to 'Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco'. This, of course, gave the group their name, which first appeared as 'The Residents Uninc.', a fictional musical organization. The Residents maintain that Halverstadt made the right decision, but the place of the Warner Bros. Album in Residential history is assured not only because of the role it played in the naming of the band. Euroralph/Germany. 2005.
Not that the Residents' discography is that easy to sort through in the first place, but here's a release where things become particularly confusing. Back in 1971, they recorded an album (actually, before they were officially the Residents) and sent it anonymously and unsolicited to Harve Halverstadt at Atlantic Records based on his association with noted musical outsider Captain Beefheart. Of course, the tape was rejected and returned to the band, care of "Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco," thus giving the band their famously anonymous moniker. But despite the future "success" of the Residents, the album remained unreleased. Fast forward 30-plus years to a time when the Residents were not only courting a newfound sense of accessibility with works ...
