Black Flag: Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar); Chuck Dukowski (vocals, bass); Keith Morris, Chavo (Ron Reyes) (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Brian Migdol, Robo (drums). Personnel: Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar); Chuck Dukowski, Keith Morris (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Brian Migdol, Robo (drums). The best collection of pre-Henry Rollins-era Black Flag. Much of The First Four Years finds the band in developmental mode, but the sonic anarchy and political vituperation met head-on more than once, creating a ferociously good time. Not simply for completists, this is an important recording of the then-burgeoning L.A. hardcore scene. ~ John Dougan 1983's THE FIRST FOUR YEARS is a handy compilation of Black Flag's first three seven-inch EPs, 1978's NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, 1980's JEALOUS AGAIN, and 1981's SIX PACK, along with two tracks from compilations and both sides of 1981's "Louie Louie"/Damaged I" single. All told, it contains the band's entire output from its pre-Henry Rollins era, though this has not stopped SST Records from reissuing the three EPs in a seemingly endless stream of formats and combinations. Before Rollins brought his more serious and political concerns to the band, Black Flag was a sometimes-goofy punk band in the tradition of the Dictators. Keith Morris and Dez Cadena, who (separately) sing most of this material, later spent time with the Circle Jerks and Redd Kross, respectively, and the sometimes pop-tinged punk of those bands is a good comparison for these unpretentious, speedy proto-hardcore nuggets. An essential L.A. punk release. Black Flag First Four Years Songs | 1. | Nervous Breakdown | |

| First Four Years Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews What can I say? I always have trouble trying to review Black Flag, because I'm always biased. Black Flag were trailblazers, they proved that no matter how hard you have it, you can achieve anything. These guys, during their years as a band, were BROKE. Yet, they not only toured the US and Canada, but even Europe. Aspiring, and kick-starting the hardcore scene, Black flag explode onto vinyl, with Nervous breakdown, Jealous again, and a few other tracks from other 7''s. This comp includes everything before Damaged LP, and is my personal favorite record EVER. Just about everything here is a perfect punk rock anthem, Nervous breakdown, Fix me, I've had it, wasted, Jealous Again, Revenge, White Minority, No Values, Clocked in, American Waste, Six Pack, I've heard it before, and Machine are the big stand outs, along with a delightful cover of Louie Louie, and the angst filled Damaged 1, this record is Sublime. (The only iffy track is You bet..., and that one was written for their previous singers, that abandoned them, pretty much.) Submitted by Chris (Agusta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar); Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Robo (drums). Photographer: Ed Colver. Perhaps the best album to emerge from the quagmire that was early-'80s California hardcore punk, the visceral, intensely physical presence of Damaged has yet to be equaled, although many bands have tried. Although Black Flag had been recording ...
