POST-MERSH VOL. 1 gathers the first two full-length releases by the seminal trio the Minutemen, 1981's THE PUNCH LINE and WHAT MAKES A MAN START FIRES (1982). D. Boon's scratchy guitar playing, Mike Watt's firmly plucked bass and George Hurley's angular drumming made for a sound that is decidedly more astringent than your typical rock threesome.
Throughout their early career, they never strayed far from short, fast, intense songs like the 36 gathered here. These recordings epitomize their surgical-strike approach to the pop song and demonstrate how the Men's scrappy, lo-fi sketchiness was one of their greatest assets. The effect of these little blasts is like that of a hail of bullets; no one bullet really stands out, but the overall impact is powerful indeed.
