Soundgarden's first full-length release, 1988's ULTRAMEGA OK, showed that there was more than met the eye to this fast-rising Seattle quartet. The group's first two releases, the EPs SCREAMING LIFE and FOPP, were both straight-ahead sludge rock, but ULTRAMEGA OK broadened the musical scope. While monolithic garage riffing and punk's messy energy were still both integral parts of the sound, healthy doses of punk and heavy metal were now added to the rich mix as the group's songwriting and instrumental prowess improved greatly. The opening "Flower" brings to mind '60s-era acid rock, while other highlights include the barnstorming "All Your Lies," the witchcraft metal of "Beyond the Wheel," the vast "Mood for Trouble," the plodding blues of "Incessant Mace," and a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning."

Soundgarden Ultramega Ok Songs Ultramega Ok Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) Not the best, but good This record wasn't as good as Louder Than Love, but its alright, a lot less commercial than all the other records. But that's the way I like my music, Soundgarden are one of my all-time favorite bands next to Nirvana. If you're a Soundgarden fan, buy this record. Ultramega awesome, OK? 'Ultramega OK' is such a great record. It deserved its Grammy nomination and for a more bluesy side to Soundgarden, this is the album to get.
If you like this, pick up Soundgarden 'Screaming Life/Fopp' record, it's hard to find but fantastic if you find it. Submitted by Chrissy (Woodinville, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Ahead Of Their Time...Really Before this came out, most rock was getting boring and old-Along comes Soundgarden who had creative control over their music(almost unheard of then)and some cool graphic artists working for them, and they changed indie rock for good-Very influential to say the least;it seemed like it was finally okay to feel bummed out sometimes-Great bass and drums, the guitar is quite abrasive, and Chris Cornell's vocals are AMAZING!!!-Get this along with Louder Than Love for a complete experience beyond words. Ultramega Ok album
$7.59 "Pretty Noose" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
They still come armed with their trademark guitar rumble and Chris Cornell's bellowing vocals. But once again, as on 1994's SUPERUNKNOWN, Soundgarden use their Led Zeppelin roots and Black Sabbath might as springboards toward melodic structure and instrumental experimentation not normally associated with bands this heavy.
DOWN ON THE UPSIDE begins with "Pretty Noose," a swirling magma of guitar tones not unlike those generated by fellow Seattlites Alice ...

Ultramega Ok CD music
$6.49 Soundgarden was one of several late-'80s Seattle bands to sign to a major label, as A&M issued the band's second full-length effort, 1989's LOUDER THAN LOVE. While it wasn't the big commercial breakthrough the group had hoped for (that would come with Soundgarden's exceptional follow-up, 1991's BADMOTORFINGER), LOUDER THAN LOVE did a solid job ...

Ultramega Ok music CDs
$11.99 On the eve of up-and-coming Seattle rockers Mother Love Bone's full-length major label debut (1990's APPLE), singer Andrew Wood succumbed to a drug overdose. Longtime friend Chris Cornell, the singer of Soundgarden, wrote several songs in Wood's memory. These were rooted more in classic rock than his full-time band's metallic sound. Cornell recorded them with ex-members of Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, and then-unknowns Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder, in a project called Temple Of The Dog.
The project's self-titled 1991 debut fell on deaf ears. While such songs as the sullen album opener "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and the epic jamfest "Reach Down" have lyrics that deal ...

Ultramega Ok songs
$7.85 BADMOTORFINGER was reissued briefly with a limited-edition bonus disc titled S.O.M.M.S, featuring B-sides and one live track.
Soundgarden couldn't have picked a better time to issue its best album yet, BADMOTORFINGER, in the fall of 1991. The Seattle explosion (which also included Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains) was just about to take off, and along with such other classic albums as NEVERMIND, TEN, and FACELIFT, BADMOTORFINGER benefited greatly from all of the newfound media attention and critical praise. New bassist Ben Shepherd fit in perfectly with the band, evidenced by this incredibly consistent album. Although Soundgarden's breakthrough hit, "Outshined," remains ...

Ultramega Ok album
$13.89 As Soundgarden began to create a buzz by the summer of 1990 (due largely in part to the group's excellent 1989 major-label debut, LOUDER THAN LOVE), Soundgarden's original label, Sub Pop, issued this compilation of two of the band's first EPs. SCREAMING LIFE/FOPP shows the band in its formative stages--while most of the tracks aren't on par with the band's future classics, plenty of highlights are included. If you're a ...

Ultramega Ok songs
$13.85 Opeth's debut, Orchid, was quite an audacious release, a far-beyond-epic prog/death monstrosity exuding equal parts beauty and brutality -- an album so brilliant, so navel-gazingly pretentious that, in retrospect, Opeth's future greatness was a foregone conclusion. Fact is, these Swedes -- with the opening cut, "In Mist She Was Standing," exceeding the 14-minute mark -- laid their cards on the table at the beginning of the hand and still took the pot, so ambitious and convincing is the band's artistic vision. And while the record finds the group searching for the razor-sharp focus and prominent emotional hook put forth on the later, classic releases My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, and Blackwater Park, Orchid is still an exhilarating listen, with the band meshing double-time death tempos with bleak, frostbitten riffs and moodily expansive, jazz-influenced, melodic instrumental passages sporting an abundance of delicate acoustic guitars and pianos. Mastermind Mikael Akerfeldt's guttural growls puncture the nearly interminable arrangements with the kind of brutality that stops die-hard death and black metal fans from giving up on the lengthy arrangements completely, although with five exorbitant cuts clocking in at ten-plus minutes (three of them over 13 minutes), some fat-trimming would have kept things even remotely manageable. Still, one has to admire Opeth's unwavering adherence to the album's astoundingly depressive tone, Orchid being a near-brilliant ode to misery that would kick the door down for Akerfeldt and his cohorts to claim sole ownership of a well-conceived and, at the time, startlingly unique sound. [Note: Orchid was originally released in 1995 and reissued in 2000 by London-based label Candlelight with a bonus track, "Into the Frost of Winter," ...
