INTOLERANCE is the first full-length solo effort from ex-Husker Du drummer/singer/songwriter Grant Hart. His former band were key architects of the post-punk, "alternative" sound later developed and popularized by bands like Nirvana. Along with guitarist/singer Bob Mould (who went on to record both solo and with Sugar), Hart helped pioneer a style that was equal parts precise songcraft and utterly unforgiving sonic barrage. The latter is shown in the opener here, "Fanfare in D Major," in which Hart's strained rock & roll voice emerges through a chaotic wash of guitar. Elsewhere, Hart's penchant for tuneful, impassioned hooks surfaces in the swinging, expansive "You're the Victim," the anthemic feel of "2541," and the spare piano accompaniment and drunken, Irish pub-like singalong chorus of "The Main."
While Mould's presence is sorely missed, as are Husker Du's uncompromising sonic experiments, Grant Hart's talents as a front man are showcased here in such tracks as the hymn-like "She Can See the Angels Coming." INTOLERANCE is recommended for avid Husker collectors and fans of Hart's songwriting.Goldmine - Recommended "...honest and musically surefooted..."

If you wanted to see the musical genious that made Husker Du (without the anger and alcoholism of Bob Mould) great, I suggest you grab this album before it fades away. Grant makes his amazing compilation rythmically fresh with a more subdued hommage to his roots. I was glad to see him branch out with such originality. You won't be disappointed with this selection.

Husker Du really hit their stride on this sprawling 1984 release. ZEN ARCADE established the band as one of the leading lights on the American indie scene. The 23 songs are loosely linked to a narrative structure about a young man who leaves home, only to discover the world to be as oppressive and full of hypocrisy as home life had been. While the proto-punk genius of the Modern Lovers' first records is well known, not so publicized is their short-lived tenure as a live band. The live treatment has mixed results on the Modern Lovers' repertoire; Jonathan Richman has two types of songs: the fast-and-furious rockers ("She Cracked"), which benefit greatly from the live setting, and the slow-burning love songs ("Hospital"), which are not as well suited.
