Flower album
$13.79 Soundgarden's first full-length release, 1988's ULTRAMEGA OK, showed that there was more than met the eye to this fast-rising Seattle quartet. The group's first two releases, the EPs SCREAMING LIFE and FOPP, were both straight-ahead sludge rock, but ULTRAMEGA OK broadened the musical scope. While monolithic garage riffing and punk's messy energy were still both integral parts of the sound, healthy doses ...

$7.25 "Pretty Noose" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
They still come armed with their trademark guitar rumble and Chris Cornell's bellowing vocals. But once again, as on 1994's SUPERUNKNOWN, Soundgarden use their Led Zeppelin roots and Black Sabbath might as springboards toward melodic structure and instrumental experimentation not normally associated with bands this heavy.
DOWN ON THE UPSIDE begins with "Pretty Noose," a swirling magma of guitar tones not unlike those generated by fellow Seattlites Alice In Chains. But Soundgarden avoids the typical grunge ruts. Guitarist Kim Thayil pulls out a mandolin a couple of times; on "Ty Cobb," he begins by noodling innocuously on it but works up to furious soloing. Soundgarden's punk roots show on that song and on "Never Named," but on other tracks the band shows its subtlety. "Applebite," which features drummer Matt Cameron on a Moog synthesizer, is eerie ...
| | Soundgarden Louder Than Love CD (1990)
Flower music CDs
$6.49 Soundgarden was one of several late-'80s Seattle bands to sign to a major label, as A&M issued the band's second full-length effort, 1989's LOUDER THAN LOVE. While it wasn't the big commercial breakthrough the group had hoped for (that would come with Soundgarden's exceptional follow-up, 1991's BADMOTORFINGER), LOUDER THAN LOVE did a solid job of introducing the quartet to both the alternative and metal crowds. The late-'80s metal scene was glutted with disposable glam bands, which Soundgarden was a much-needed reaction against (the group even pokes fun at the genre with the parody "Big Dumb Sex").
Elsewhere, LOUDER THAN LOVE is loaded with soon-to-be Soundgarden classics: the pro-environmental "Hands All Over"; the grinding album opener, "Ugly Truth"; ...

$11.99 On the eve of up-and-coming Seattle rockers Mother Love Bone's full-length major label debut (1990's APPLE), singer Andrew Wood succumbed to a drug overdose. Longtime friend Chris Cornell, the singer of Soundgarden, wrote several songs in Wood's memory. These were rooted more in classic rock than his full-time band's metallic sound. Cornell recorded them with ex-members of Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, and then-unknowns Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder, in a project called Temple Of The Dog.
The project's self-titled 1991 debut fell on deaf ears. While such songs as the sullen album opener "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and the epic jamfest "Reach Down" have lyrics that deal with Wood's passing, most of the tracks deal with other topics, such as the album's high point "Hunger Strike," as well as the organic-sounding "Wooden Jesus," the hard rocker "Your Saviour," and the drowsy album closer "All Night Thing." A year after its initial release, the Seattle rock scene exploded and the massive success of the members of Temple Of The Dog prompted A&M to re-release both the album and the video for "Hunger Strike." Both were immediate ...

$13.89 As Soundgarden began to create a buzz by the summer of 1990 (due largely in part to the group's excellent 1989 major-label debut, LOUDER THAN LOVE), Soundgarden's original label, Sub Pop, issued this compilation of two of the band's first EPs. SCREAMING LIFE/FOPP shows the band in its formative stages--while most of the tracks aren't on par with the band's future classics, plenty of highlights are included. If you're a fan of Soundgarden's more straight-ahead material, SCREAMING LIFE/FOPP is highly recommended. "Hunted Down" contains one of the band's heaviest riffs of all time, while "Little Joe" shows that the band's ...

$12.85 Eazy E’s Latino Protégés the Brownside Release Sophomore Album "The Take Over"The late Eazy-E’s sole Latino protégés, The Brownside, have just released their second album, “The Takeover.” Their first album, “Eastside Drama,” issued in 1995, had been slated for release through Eazy-E’s Ruthless label, until the Compton rapper’s tragic death ended a solid paper trail of release agreements that had been signed between himself and the intensely street oriented gangsta rappers. Finally returning with “The Takeover,” The Brownside is back again with real life street cred, history and tracks that have helped give them their often verified, authentic “la vida gangsta” reputation. The Brownside members are Wicked, Trouble and Toker, who is currently serving time for a sentence in a federal prison. “I expect to be out of here by the end of next year,” he promises. In the meantime, however, his album speaks volumes for him. Eazy’s son, Lil E, still has memories of his father’s close friend Toker, from when they escorted the then ten-year old mini E around Disneyland. “I can’t wait to see Lil E when I am out of here,” says Toker, who adds, “I have a lot to tell him about his father.” Eazy-E and Toker were such a fixture, that in Jerry Heller’s upcoming book, “Ruthless,” slated for release in late August, Heller begins describing the end of Eric’s life by writing, “Only a handful of people were closest to Eric in the weeks leading up to his death. Toker, aka Little Beaver, his Latino street connection. The mixmaster Julio G.” Heller also cites The Brownside in relation to Eric’s both visionary and deep desire to become involved in the Latin rap movement, a move that was unfortunately nixed because of his death.Wicked explains, “Toker and Eazy were blood brothers.” He adds, “Eazy was so supportive of us, he kept trying to talk us into changing the name of the group to M.W.A., but we never did. He was relentless about it. He even wrote these little notes in the studio, trying to convince us.” He observes, “Eric was really looking forward to releasing our group on Ruthless, and we played some dates with Eazy and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.” Wicked points to “La Despendida (Farewell)” as his favorite track on the group’s second album, which is released by P.R. Records. As fate would have it, Trouble and Toker originally met in prison. Toker has stated, “We’re not rappers trying to be gangstas, we’re gangstas trying ...
