After the relative success of 1987's Escape From Noise album, studio project Negativland found itself in the strange position of being expected to go on a money-losing tour. To get out of the tour, the band cooked up a phony press release linking their song "Christianity Is Stupid" to a multiple murder, claiming that federal officials had told the band not to leave town. This prank quickly spiraled out of control, with many media sources taking their news from each other instead of reality. This media circus became the basis for the first half of the album Helter Stupid, which deconstructs the media, the controversy, and sensationalism. Although the root of all of this material is perhaps ethically questionable, "Helter Stupid" is a brilliant lampoon of the media and makes the listener question just what is being fed to them as "information." Filling out the album is a series of "Perfect Cut" tracks, which meld together tons of singles from the '70s and then get Negativland audio blender treatment. Although the songs have their moments, they're not really enough to sustain half an album, especially after such a good start. ~ Sean Carruthers Negativland Helter Stupid Songs Helter Stupid Review

Helter Stupid album
$14.55 While the sound collage of Negativland's first three studio albums pointed in the band's ultimate direction, they were really rough sketches compared to Escape From Noise. Escape is a full-on audio assault, more musical than ever, but with tight and well-constructed sound sections thrown in. Instead of simply a collection of sounds and snippets, however, each cut on Escape From Noise picks a target and takes aim. "Quiet Please" takes on market research in the world of radio. "Michael Jackson" is a laundry list of pop stars being charged with creating commercial pop. "Sycamore" turns happy, shiny, new pre-planned communities into something far more sinister. Although some other tracks ("Yellow, Black and Rectangular," "Car Bomb") don't really take on particular targets, they're fun nonetheless. Probably the most accomplished piece is the strangely creepy "Time Zones," which talks about how many time zones there are in the Soviet Union (there are 11, by the way, and it's not even funny). Although it wasn't apparent at the time, the centerpiece of the album would be "Christianity Is Stupid," a prime example of how sound bites can be rearranged to say whatever you want them to say. (The full sound bites appear on the album Helter Stupid, the first half of which was inspired by a media frenzy after the band ...

| | Jandek - Jandek On Corwood DVD (2004)
Helter Stupid album
$14.29 How does one make a documentary about an undocumented man? Filmmakers Chad Friedrichs and Paul Fehler did just that, working for a year and a half, interviewing various journalists in order to demystify the reclusive musician known as Jandek. Linking the artist's cryptic lyrics to imagery found in and around his home in Texas, the filmmakers create a deeply cinematic, haunting landscape. They succeed in creating a world that, like Jandek's music, is simultaneously mesmerizing and disturbing.
The J.D. Salinger of the music world, Jandek lives a secretive existence, refusing interviews and photographs. Taking the term "underground" to an extreme, Jandek (who has released over 37 albums since 1978) isolates himself from the press, seemingly obsessed with avoiding public attention. However, in spite of, and because of his attempt to remain anonymous, Jandek has made himself into an underground celebrity by shrouding himself in the alluring cloud of mystery. If he really doesn't want people to be interested in him, then he might know better than to create such intrigue. In a culture so obsessed with celebrity, artists like Jandek consciously or unconsciously create quite a scandal.
Jandek's songs push the boundaries of traditional ...
| | U2 Zooropa CD (1993)
Helter Stupid CD music
$10.45 ZOOROPA won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
The bright, digital-looking album artwork alone hints at U2's intentions on ZOOROPA--to take the group's electronica-laced approach on ACHTUNG BABY to the next level. While ambient-music pioneer Brian Eno had a strong presence on the former album, here he's practically a fifth member, contributing synthesizers and keyboards to most of the disc's 10 tracks.
Fans looking for vestiges of the old, JOSHUA TREE-era U2 are essentially left empty-handed, though the gorgeously spare and melancholy "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" does touch on their earnest earlier sound. ZOOROPA truly gets going with the fascinatingly droning "Numb," which features the Edge on lead vocals and stands as the most adventurous single that the Irish quartet has ever released. From here the album hits a stride, careening through the giddy Euro-disco of "Lemon," the aforementioned "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," the heavily percussive "Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car," and the funky, chiming "Some Days Are Better Than Others." Wrapping up the quirkiest outing in U2's discography is an appropriately strange, yet inspired song--"The Wanderer," where Kraftwerk-like synths and dreamy backing vocals support the unmistakable voice of the legendary Johnny Cash. Although, ZOOROPA is often overlooked, it's an ambitious record that marks a crucial point in U2's evolution.
