Sweet Honey In The Rock album
$14.65 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Pioneering a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock celebrated their silver anniversary in style by releasing TWENTY-FIVE in 1998. Still helmed by founder Bernice Johnson Reagon at the time, the group displayed their trademark eclecticism and vocal mastery on the album. Sometimes it's difficult to believe one is hearing only a handful of voices and not a full-blown choir, as the complex vocal lines weave in and out of each other like a carefully constructed tapestry. As ever, Sweet Honey produces a stylistic smorgasbord; there's their take on reggae (Bob Marley's classic "Redemption Song"), gospel ("I Was Standing by the Bedside of a Neighbor"), and liberally sprinkled dashes of blues, R&B, traditional African music, and even doo wop (this being an a cappella group after all) rounding out their sound.
Recorded at Bias Recording Company, Springfield, Virginia. Includes liner notes by Jim Bessman.
Personnel: Aisha Kahlil (vocals, cymbals, tambourine); ...

| | Tom Lehrer That Was The Year That Was CD (1965)
Sweet Honey In The Rock music CDs
$9.45 Imagine a Harvard professor (which he was) with a gift for the piano (which he had), and the iconoclastic humorous bent of a Lenny Bruce or George Carlin (right on the money), and you'll get a good picture of musical humorist Tom Lehrer, whose delightfully twisted ditties presaged the counterculture of both the Beats and the hippies. Unlike those bohemian types, Lehrer never let it all hang out; his professorial demeanor was part of his shtick, making his outrageous lyrical content all the more effective.
Though he was a key comedic figure throughout the '50s, THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS is Lehrer's only '60s studio recording, and his last before his early retirement from music. No stone is left unturned, as he skewers the Catholic church to ragtime accompaniment on "The Vatican Rag," ...
| | Sweet Honey In The Rock Sacred Ground CD (1995)
Sweet Honey In The Rock songs
$13.29 Rooted in spiritual music and steeped in African-American tradition without being preachy or heavy-handed, Sacred Ground pulls from the various faiths and life experiences of the women of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Their differences are reflected in their voices, writing, and inspirations and they create the greatness of this ensemble, exemplifying their belief that perfect harmony and unity can be borne out of diversity. Bernice Johnson Reagon sets the pace here as the main songwriter and longest continual member of the group. Her poetry can't help but offer cause for contemplation of our own lives, the lives of others, and the lives of our ancestors. Regardless of your ethnicity or faith, the African-American spirituals "No More Auction Block," "Balm in Gilead," and "Jordan River" sink into your core and make you think, make you feel. Ysaye Barnwell contributes "Would You Harbor Me," "Prayer," and "We Are," three songs that all but beg us to love one another as we love ourselves, despite the differences between us. One of the simplest and sweetest melodies comes from Carol Maillard in "Prayer to the One," which makes the point that God or Spirit is with us everywhere at every moment, indeed closer than our very breath. The journey these women, these voices, and these songs take you on is incredible, and leads you through many lands and times in search of the sacred, only to discover that everything and everyone that exists is sacred. ~ Kelly McCartney

| | Camel I Can See Your House From Here CD (1979) Import
Sweet Honey In The Rock album
$15.15 Although not an honest representation of the band's character, this is undoubtedly their most popular work. The one-time addition of American Kit Watkins produces some fine keyboard lead work. Rupert Hine's resourceful production and appearances by Phil Collins and Mel Collins round out this strong import release. "Survival" and "Who We Are" feature some fine orchestrations, and guitarist Latimer delivers some exceptional lead work on the album's closer, "Ice." ~ Matthew Plichta
All songs written or co-written by members of Camel.

| | Best Of Bread CD (2001)
Sweet Honey In The Rock CD music
$15.55 Recorded between 1970 & 1976. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
In the mid-'70s, David Gates and his group Bread were the rulers of the soft-rock roost, and deservedly so. As this concise compilation shows, Gates was masterful not only at mating infectious hooks with pithy sentiments, but at finding the emotional truth beneath all the dewy-eyed melodicism. From the visceral ache in the bridge of the majestic "Everything I Own" to the almost-candid desire behind "Baby I'm-A Want You," Bread wasn't just passing sunny ditties off on a pop-hungry public, they were putting their all into these tunes. Dig a little deeper, and you'll even hear a hint of politicization in "Mother Freedom" and willful self-consciousness in "The Guitar Man." Many lesser groups followed in the footsteps of Bread, dominating the '70s airwaves, but as THE BEST OF BREAD proves, Gates and company not only did it first, they did ...

Sweet Honey In The Rock CD music
$14.85 Star Queen's YOUR TRUE SELF combines classic heavy metal with gothic and progressive tendencies.
Your True Self is the second album from the unique project Star Queen, and the second part of the concept which started in 2002 with their debut "Faithbringer". There is only a light motive connecting the two albums. The sound now is much more powerful - and definitely more gothic and melancholic. The long solos and power metal elements are replaced with darker lyrics, more melodies and harmonies. The progressive structure of the songs and the classical heavy metal background are the trademarks of Winterlong's guitar player Thorbjorn Englund and his style of arranging and producing. Singer and composer Stella Tormanoff has done the artwork this time and developed the fairy tale of "Faithbringer" into the philosophical and existencial quest of being ...

| | Percy Faith Viva!: The Music Of Mexico CD (1958) Japan; Remastered; Mini LP Sleeve
Sweet Honey In The Rock album
$27.79 Percy Faith frequently dabbled in world music and had a great enthusiasm for Latin and exotic rhythms, which he explored on albums such as The Music of Brazil! and Jungle Drums. Viva! The Music of Mexico is his musical evocation of Mexico and, like many of his albums, straddles the wide line between moody and boisterous. Stomping passages with percussion and brass segue into movements of sweet violins and vice versa. The humorous arrangement of "La Cucaracha" suggests what Spike Jones might have sounded like as a mood music maestro, and Faith's treatment of "Mexican Hat Dance" could have been scored for Disney. There is nothing "authentic" about Viva! The Music of Mexico -- Faith mines the music and touristy image of Mexico for inspiration ...
