By the time THE GREAT CONCH TRAIN ROBBERY was recorded at the tail end of the 1970s, songwriter Shel Silverstein had long since gained renown through the songs he wrote for Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, and Dr. Hook, and recorded some quirky albums on his own. On his earlier recordings he flirted with folk, rock, and other styles, but here he comes as close as possible to making a straight country record, complete with hot pickers like Sam Bush and John Hartford. The songs themselves, of course, are typically satirical and uproarious, and Silverstein--who never pretended to be a singer-delivers them in his characteristic endearingly wheezy croak--a rarefied pleasure to be sure, but a consistently rewarding one.

| | There Is No Eye: Music For Photographs CD (2001)
Great Conch Train Robbery music CDs
$13.45 THERE IS NO EYE compiles recordings of musicians photographed by photographer/filmmaker John Cohen.
Recorded between 1953 and 2001. Includes liner notes and song annotations by John Cohen.
This various-artists folk compilation is a companion CD to John Cohen's book of photographs, There Is No Eye. Cohen, as many people interested in the music assembled here will already know, is not just a photographer, but also a filmmaker, producer, and musician who was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers. Whether or not you have the book (and some photos are included in the liner notes), this is a good anthology, though so eclectic that there aren't any particularly strong conceptual threads connecting the tracks (seven of which were previously unissued). Undoubtedly, the song to attract the greatest interest will be Bob Dylan's "Roll on John," a previously unreleased performance of a traditional song from a 1962 New York radio show. It's ...
| | O Sister 2: A Women's Bluegrass Collection CD (2002)
Great Conch Train Robbery songs
$14.59 In the wake of the success of O Sister in 2001, the Rounder label wisely decided to follow it up with another collection of bluegrass songs, old and new, performed by female singers and instrumentalists. Though the sound of hard-edged and high-pitched men's voices has almost defined bluegrass music from the beginning, women have made significant contributions as well, though those contributions have not always gotten the recognition they deserved. O Sister 2: A Woman's Bluegrass Collection continues the project of rectifying that oversight, and does so quite nicely by showcasing performances by relative unknowns like Carol Elizabeth Jones and Alecia McKnight alongside such usual suspects as Rhonda Vincent, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris, and the inevitable Alison Krauss. Stylistically, this second collection ranges a bit further afield than the first one did; alongside strictly traditional material like "Poor Ellen Smith" (sung with reedy power by the gracefully aging Ola Belle Reed) and the Jimmy Martin classic "Pretending I Don't Care" (performed here by Rhonda Vincent), there are more pop-flavored delights, such as Carol Elizabeth Jones' sweetly tuneful original song "Someday" and even a downright avant-garde contribution from the Wayfaring Strangers, whose "Memories of You" features a klezmer clarinet. Everything here is worth hearing, though overall this collection doesn't pack quite as much punch as the first one did. ~ Rick Anderson
Includes liner notes by Ronni Lundy.
