3 stars He was fun, now he's dead.
I saw him once or twice in Austin around '80. Diverting. Sorta fun. I got this album somewhere at a used CD place. I guess he liked to get fu up, oh, I mean intoxicated on illicit drugs. Oh well.

Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. PRESIDENT ALIEN was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. Yerba Buena, a Latin/urban fusion project spearheaded by Andres Levin (who's worked with crossover artists ranging from Arto Lindsay to Tia Carrere), isn't too much more than the sum of its parts. Fortunately, however, those parts are certainly astonishing enough to create a breathtaking record capable of hooking fans from some wide-ranging styles: hip-hop, trance, R&B, and of course, Latin music. Comprised mostly of Cubans or natives of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Yerba Buena has a command over Latin forms that erases national boundaries and pulverizes time constraints -- moving deftly from guajira to salsa to son, they're also perfectly adept at incorporating the music of the American street circa 2003 into forms more familiar to farmers in Cuban fields circa 1939. The open-ended character of the jam "Guajira" permits vocals from a traditional Latin chorus as well as nods to urban radio. Lead diva Xiomara Laugart melds house music and salsa with all the power and energy of la India, while rapper el Chino fills in with some solid rhymes and a few party-vocal asides. The band is perfectly fluent and a powerhouse unit, while the roster of guests is startling in its variety -- Carlinhos Brown, Bobby Valentin, Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Money Mark, Marc Ribot, and Roy Hargrove, among many others. In essence, Yerba Buena is simply pulling the same trick that boogaloo popsters and salsafied funksters did during the '60s and '70s (respectively), updating Latin music with touches to intrigue listeners who wouldn't normally be listening to it. Cabo Verde. A country whose name is both familiar and enigmatic. These islands, a collection of volcanoes, deserts, mountains and canyons, lie some 300 miles off the Senegalese coast. They are separate yet connected to Africa. The earliest and still active connection to the mainland are the trade winds named the 'Harmattan' which has been carrying breeze and sand from the Sahara to the islands since forever. Eventually ships would ride these winds and visit the archipelago. It was the Portuguese boats that dropped anchor, colonized and named Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) over 500 years ago creating an economic state whose commerce of choice was one of the most inhumane and barbaric trades ever devised by man-slavery.
