Arranger: Brave Old World. Klezmer, an extremely infectious style of music that Jews brought to the U.S., comes in many forms -- some more Americanized than others. On Klezmer Music, the band Brave Old World emphasizes klezmer's Euro-Jewish roots. But while this CD is a throwback to the years before klezmer came under jazz's influence, this band does have a looseness, an element of spontaneity and a sense of improvisation that jazz musicians can admire. One may notice the similarity these songs (some of them instrumental, some with vocals) have to Arab, Greek, Armenian and Turkish music. But whatever comparisons are made, klezmer has a distinctive sound that Brave Old World has clearly mastered. ~ Alex Henderson Klezmer Music Music | List Price | $30.99 (You save $5.40) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, World CDs, International, Folk, Jewish, Klezmer | | Label | Flying Fish | | Orig Year | 1990 | | All Time Sales Rank | 140373 | | CD Universe Part number | 1024976 | | Catalog number | 847069 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Mar 11, 1991 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Brave New World | | Engineer | Tom Orsi | | Personnel | Stuart Brotman - acoustic bass, cimbalom, tuba, balalaikas, percussion Alan Bern - piano, accordion Joel Rubin - clarinet Michael Alpert - vocals, violin

Audio Mixer: Tim Palmer. Recording information: Cello Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Fudge Studios, New Orleans, LA; Fudge, New Orleans, LA. Photographers: Chris Brown ; Tom Corbett; Chris George. Unknown Contributor Role: John Gros. With the rather cryptically titled Before the Robots, Better Than Ezra settles down into a comfortable adult pop groove, no longer dabbling in the hip-hop and electronica that has surfaced on every album since 1997's How Does Your Garden Grow? In its place is a surprisingly soulful undercurrent that surfaces on such laid-back highlights as "Daylight" and "It's Only Natural." Instead of pointing Better Than Ezra in a new direction, these soulful pop tunes are used as accents on a collection of straight-ahead, anthemic, songwriter-driven rock. While there are still some snarls of electric guitars, Before the Robots is largely a meditative work, built on acoustic guitars; even when it hits hard and gets loud, it's with layers of vocal harmonies, ...
