Like bebop and Dixieland, bluegrass often functions as repertory music. Straight-ahead jazz is full of artists who insist on playing the same beaten-to-death standards over and over, and there are many bluegrass musicians who have a similar mindset -- only they'll give you yet another version of "Rocky Top" instead of yet another version of "Giant Steps." But Tony Ellis was never the sort of bluegrass musician who had a "warhorses only" policy. He's a prolific composer -- in addition to being an excellent banjo player/fiddler -- and he does almost all of the writing on Farewell My Home. The only song on this 23-track CD that Ellis didn't write is the traditional hymn "Come Thy Fount of Every Blessing; the other 22 tracks are all Ellis originals. Produced by Stephen Wade in 1991, Farewell My Home finds Ellis forming a duo with his son, Bill Ellis (who is heard on acoustic guitar). And this father-and-son team enjoys a strong rapport on tunes that range from fast and exuberant ("Wild Fox," "T Model Ford," "Red Dog") to contemplative and wistful ("Kate, Bride of Matt," "Straw Dolls"). One of the CD's most lyrical offerings is the title track, which Ellis wrote in memory of America's early Irish immigrants as well as those who starved during Ireland's tragic potato famine. The piece has a strong Irish/Celtic flavor, which makes perfect sense because bluegrass (like country and Anglo-American folk) is a descendent of the jigs, reels, and airs that Irish and Scottish immigrants brought with them when they moved to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. From the exhilarating to the reflective, Farewell My Home paints a consistently attractive picture of both Ellis the musician and Ellis the composer. ~ Alex Henderson

Farewell My Home album
$12.29 "Get Right With God" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
The follow-up to Lucinda Williams's commercial/critical breakthrough CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD is anything but a market-geared, commercial effort. Rather, ESSENCE is the sound of lovelorn melancholy being delicately bottled, then gently let loose in a recording studio with a group of skilled roots-rockers to ease it along on its way to the microphone. The tender beauty of these heart-on-sleeve tunes goes hand in hand with the overwhelming, unapologetic misery of the sentiments expressed in the lyrics. As always, Williams displays her gift for getting the maximum poetic mileage out of the simplest verbal structures. The simply rendered images of heartbreak and emotional isolation are organic and resonant, ...
| | Gregg Allman Laid Back CD (1973) Remastered
Farewell My Home CD music
$6.49 Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases. He covers his own "Midnight Rider" in a more mournful, dirge-like manner, and Jackson Browne's "These Days" gets its most touching and tragic-sounding rendition as well. Although Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe are here, there's very little that sounds like the Allman Brothers Band -- prominent guitars, apart from a few licks by Tommy Talton ...

| | Guy Clark Dublin Blues CD (1995)
Farewell My Home album
$8.39 Texas-to-Nashville country-folk troubadour Clark was always more "respected" than popular, so it's not surprising that this rare major label outing failed to earn him an audience beyond his loyal cult. Regardless, DUBLIN BLUES is full of songs as good as any Clark ever wrote. Restrained but effective production puts Clark's rough, whiskey-and-cigarettes voice and quietly poetic lyrics front and center, which is the key to success for a songwriter this powerful. The title cut is an instant classic (later covered by Clark's buddy/peer Townes Van Zandt), a bit of visionary folkie melancholy. The closer "The Randall Knife" bookends the album perfectly, with a spoken lyric that speaks volumes about the complex ...
| | Steve Earle Jerusalem CD (2002)
Farewell My Home CD music
$14.29 JERUSALEM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
For a singer-songwriter who proclaims himself "somewhat to the left of Mao" it's no surprise that Steve Earle has drawn the ire of the right for challenging the status quo, particularly around the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. The bone of conention on his 2002 outing JERUSALEM is "John Walker's Blues," a moody, mid-tempo number that attempts to explore the reasoning behind "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh's actions. It triggered a wave of knee-jerk reactions accusing Earle of being everything from the second coming of Hanoi Jane to a washed-up anti-American opportunist.
Conservatives will ...

Farewell My Home album
$15.05 A number of fascinating opposites characterize Maura O'Connell's approach to music. Born and raised in Ireland, she currently lives in Nashville. She's recorded Celtic and country albums, but also worked with newgrass pioneers Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck. Her rich, powerful voice, however, travels with her wherever she goes. Walls & Windows is her first recording in several years and her debut on the Sugar Hill label. This time she's backed by a full band with players like Darrell Scott and Dave Francis providing soulful, layered sound. ...
