Chicago bluesmasters Buddy Guy and Junior Wells had been seasoned veterans for decades by the time this 1994 live album was recorded, which explains the seemingly effortless level of searing intensity that comes across on the set. DRINKIN' TNT N' SMOKIN' DYNAMITE finds the longtime collaborators tearing up the stage with a repertoire of Wells's tunes, including "Checking On My Baby," "Ten Years Ago," and "Hoodoo Man Blues." Guy's sizzling six-string antics are the perfect complement to Wells's harp playing and hard-hitting vocal style. With a band that includes pianist Pinetop Perkins and the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman on bass, it's hard to pass up this this blast of classic Chicago blues. Cut at the 1974 Montreux Jazz Festival with Stones' bassist Bill Wyman anchoring the rhythm section, the set captures some of the ribald musical repartee that customarily distinguished the pairing of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, though they certainly break no new ground as they roll through their signature songs. ~ Bill DahlDown Beat (4/92, p.40) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...Wells blows slick, Sonny Boy-ish harp and growls trademark tunes...Guy plucks tasty fills and solos with a subtelty that belies his ax-strangling reputation..." Drinkin' TNT 'N' Smokin' Dynamite
$18.99 The Good Brothers have gained a worldwide audience over the course of their accomplished career. Bruce and twin Brian, along with kid brother Larry, knew they were destined for something bigger than their suburban Toronto roots. Formed in the early '70's, the Good Brothers first gig was a legendary Toronto club, The Riverboat, on May 14, 1974. They played simple music, straight from the heart that encompassed country, bluegrass, folk and the occasional taste from the rock and roll songbook. Fiddle tunes flowed as did cover songs, highlighted by Larry's banjo breaks, Bruce's autoharp, their unique sibling harmonies, and enough on-stage-energy to burn down the cornfield. The memories continued. James Accroyd and various pals from The Grateful Dead supported the first record, distributed by Columbia. Then came the cross-Canada trip on the infamous Festival Express with ...

Drinkin' TNT 'N' Smokin' Dynamite
$10.99 Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee: Big Joe Williams (vocals, guitar); Joining Sonny, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee (vocals); Lightnin' Hopkins (guitar). This 2006 collection ably lives up to its name, providing a fine selection of recordings by the renowned blues duo of harp player Sonny Terry and guitarist Brownie McGhee. Sharing vocal duties, Terry and McGhee saunter through a set of classics here, including the laid-back "Early in the Morning Blues." Although these latter-day songs lack the edge of the pair's seminal 1940s and '50s work, they still showcase Terry and McGhee's remarkably intuitive interplay, particularly on the plaintive "Trouble in Mind" and the shuffling "It Takes a Worried Man." As a primer on the partnership of Terry and McGhee, you could do a lot worse than this budget-priced disc. Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee made their first recording together in 1941, and became the longest-running blues duo in memory, stringing out nearly 40 years of recordings and gigs until their gradually emerging distaste for each other finally proved insurmountable and brought an end to the musical partnership. Although they recorded in a surprisingly varied ...
