| | Luther Allison Serious CD Luther Allison Discography of CDs
Serious marks the beginning of Luther Allison's late-'80s/early-'90s hot streak. The more streamlined, rock-oriented approach actually is a benefit, since it gives Allison a shot of energy that makes his guitar simply burn all the way through the record. ~ Thom Owens

Serious album
$14.15 All songs written or co-written by Luther Allison except "I Want To Know" (De Santo/Geddins/Badger), "She Was Born That Way," "Love String" (Mosley/Johnson) and "The Things I Used To Do" (Jones).
Soul Fixin' Man was blues guitarist/vocalist Luther Allison's first American recording in nearly 20 years. However, his domestic inactivity was not because Allison had stopped playing music. Far ...
| | Luther Allison Love Me Papa CD (1977)
Serious CD music
$10.39 Luther Allison is the blues' proverbial little boy with the curl; when he's good, he's great. When he's bad, he's awful. Allison was on throughout most of the nine tracks (three bonus cuts) on this 1977 date recently reissued by Evidence on CD, playing with the ferocity, direction, and inventiveness that is often missing from his more uneven efforts. His covers of Little ...

| | Luther Allison Pay It Forward CD (2002) (Import) Germany
Serious CD music
$9.45 Recorded from 1984 to 1994 during Luther's self-imposed exile years in Paris. 11 tracks, many previously unreleased, including 'Slippin' Away', 'I Know', 'Perfume & Grime' & 'Love Is Free'. Includes the bonus track 'I Know'. Ruf Records. 2002.
In many cases, collections of musical odds and ends -- a live rarity here, an alternate take there -- can be uneven and inconsistent. And the people they're aimed at -- mainly diehard fans and serious collectors -- are willing to live with that. They have more than just a casual interest in the artist's work, and even the less-from-essential stuff excites and intrigues them. Assembled in 2002 -- five years after Luther Allison's death -- Pay It Forward is the sort of odds-and-ends collection that tends to appeal to diehard fans rather than casual listeners. This CD, which spans 1985-1996, contains an abundance of previously unreleased material and ranges from various live performances to an alternate version of the dark, brooding "Cherry Red Wine." Pay It Forward would probably interest obsessive collectors even if it was wildly inconsistent, but thankfully, these live and studio recordings ...

| | Irma Thomas My Heart's In Memphis: The Songs Of Dan Penn CD (2000)
Serious songs
$13.89 Dan Penn is one of the great Southern soul songwriters, and Irma Thomas is one of the great soul singers, so devoting an entire album to Penn songs was a good idea. Actually, Penn didn't so much write the material as co-write it; he composed every track with one or more co-writers, with Thomas herself getting in on the act on a couple. Four of the 13 tunes are actually interpretations of songs that have been around for a long time (such as "I'm Your Puppet" and "Woman Left Lonely"), but otherwise they were done specifically for this album. So is the result godhead? No, though it's okay. Thomas sings very well -- it's been pretty rare that she hasn't sung well, on anything -- and has a good sense of staying within herself where a lot of singers would over-emote, as on "If You Want It, Come and Get It." Recorded in Memphis (noted frequent Penn associate Spooner Oldham plays keyboards on several cuts), there's a laid-back modern soul feel that gets too laid back at times and not fiery on enough occasions. It's respectable modern soul, slicker than purists would like, but not annoyingly so. The newly written songs are alright, ...
| | George Thorogood Maverick CD (1985) (Import) United Kingdom
Serious album
$17.15 George Thorogood is forever consistent and Maverick is more of the blues/rock driving sound the journeyman guitarist is known for. John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" is what you expect from this crew while "Memphis, Tennessee" bursts at the seams with George's trademark slide and Hank Carter's saxophone. Recorded at the legendary Dimension Sound Studio in July of 1984 on the outskirts of Boston, the earthy sound catches all the band's primal energy from opener "Gear Jammer" to the wailing sax of "Long Gone." There are only four originals from Thorogood, the album chock full of Johnny Otis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others. It is territory that the group has covered on pretty much every previous record, but it's done with the artistic passion that makes it real. The vocal on "What a Price" full of torment, it's a nice contrast to the rocking numbers. ~ Joe Viglione

| | Yellowman Look How Me Sexy: Reggae Anthology CD (2001)
Serious CD music
$13.59 Considering the deluge of records Yellowman released during the '80s, you'd expect a flood of compilations to have followed, bundling up all his dizzying hits. Of course, most of the DJ's albums during that decade did precisely that, but still there was much left over for the archivists. Unfortunately, relatively ...
