All songs written by James "Snooky" Pryor except "Nine Below Zero" (Alex "Rice" Miller), "It Hurts Me Too" (Hudson Whittaker) and "Key To The Highway" (Bill Broonzy).
An outstanding comeback effort by Chicago harp pioneer Snooky Pryor, whose timeless sound meshed well with a Windy City trio led by producer/guitarist Steve Freund for this set. Mostly Pryor's own stuff -- "Why You Want to Do Me like That," "That's the Way To Do It," "Cheatin' and Lyin'" -- with his fat-toned harp weathering the decades quite nicely. ~ Bill Dahl

Snooky album
$15.05 Includes liner notes by Joe Wilson.
Recorded at Private Ear, Hyattsville, Maryland.
Recording information: Private Ear, Hyattsville, MD.
Just as the title says: a wonderful brace of simple country blues done in Jackson's warm Piedmont style. At age 75, his fingers are still nimble as he displays on a jazzy "Just Because" and his vocals still resonate nicely. Audiophile note: This album is nicely recorded and sounds like Jackson is performing about two inches from your face. A warm and engaging batch of performances not to be missed. ~ Cub Koda
Personnel includes: John Jackson (acoustic guitar).

| | Pinetop Perkins Boogie Woogie King CD (1976)
Snooky music CDs
$10.15 All songs written or co-written by Willie "Pinetop" Perkins, except "Take A Little Walk With Me" (Robert Lockwood Jr.), "Jackson Town Gal" (Robert McCullum), "Sweet Black Angel" (Hudson Whittaker) and "Lend Me Your Love" (Peter Chatman).
Although he did not have an album issued under his name as a leader until 1988, pianist Pinetop Perkins actually should have had one released in 1976, when he cut the eight tracks on this recently reissued Evidence CD for the Black and Blue label. They did not appear until 1992, which is a shame. Perkins' trademark boogie-woogie riffs, rumbling rhythms, left-hand lines, and spinning phrases were in fine form. His accompaniment and supporting phrases behind guitarist/vocalist Luther Johnson Jr. are equally tasty and inviting. Johnson, as erratic a performer as any in contemporary blues, came ready to play and sing on this date. His vocals had plenty of grit, conviction, and energy, while his playing had no excesses and was delivered with zip and flair. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Ronnie Earl I Feel Like Goin' On CD (2003) (Import) Canada
Snooky CD music
$15.19 Guitarist Ronnie Earl recorded the majority of the instrumental release I Feel Like Goin' On live in the studio with no overdubbing. As one of the best contemporary blues guitarists around, Earl naturally shows off his prowess on these 11 cuts, with sturdy assistance from Dave Limina on piano/organ, Jimmy Mouradian on bass, Lorne Entress on drums, and special guest guitarist José Alvares. On the whole, I Feel Like Goin' On is tight, passionate, and gritty, especially on the soul-blues of "Hey José," "Blues for Otis Rush," "Howlin' for My Darlin'," and "Travelin' Heavy." While the majority of the album is uptempo, Earl does slow down the pace on the beautiful ballad "Donna" and the traditional gospel-flavored "Mary Don't You Weep," featuring the only vocal appearance on the disc, by the Silver Leaf Gospel Singers. ~ Al Campbell

| | Joey Defrancesco Street Of Dreams CD (1995)
Snooky songs
$7.23 Organist Joey DeFrancesco switched to a small label for this release. He is featured with his regular trio (with guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Byron Landham), guest bassist Keter Betts, and a six-piece horn section arranged by Horace Ott. Most unusual about this set is that DeFrancesco is also heard on piano, trumpet, and vocals. Unfortunately, his singing is more heartfelt than musical and brings down the value of the record. However, DeFrancesco's organ playing is as strong as ever and he is an underrated trumpeter most influenced by Miles Davis. Among the better selections are Wes Montgomery's "Twisted Blues," Wayne Shorter's "Black Nile," and "Moanin'." ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Big Mo Studios, Kensington, Maryland. Includes liner notes by Pete Fallico.
Personnel: Joey DeFrancesco (organ); Paul Bollenback (guitars); Pete Berrenbregge (saxophone); Rick Sigler, Bruce Gates (trumpet); Rick Lillard, Doug Elliott (trombone); Dudley Hinote (bass trombone); Keter Betts (bass guitar); Byron Landham (drums).

| | Capes Hello CD (2006)
Snooky music CDs
$13.85 Here are the names of bands that flitted through the mind of a music critic while listening to the Capes' debut album, Hello: the Buzzcocks, Wire, Oasis, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Squeeze, the Beatles (again), the Jam, the Kinks (again), the Beach Boys (again). That is august company, of course, and it is also indicative of the Capes' music, which is catchy, guitar-based pop/rock that edges toward punk/new wave rock, but also boasts enough keyboard blips to show greater musical sophistication, along with occasional harmonies to sweeten things and often clever lyrics declaimed in clear British accents. In the mid-'60s, many of these tracks could have been hit singles; in the late '70s, they could have set clubs pogo-ing. In the 2000s, they can admittedly sound somewhat retro at times, but the Capes manage to reinvent their influences for their own purposes and play with enough conviction to make this infectious music their own. And they throw enough odd ingredients into the mix (the Japanese "chat" in "Shinjuku Hi-5," the eerie synth riffs in "Francophile [Ver 1.5]") to give the songs individual character. The Capes are not just pale imitators of previous generations of British rock bands, even if they bring many of those bands to mind. They accomplish the feat of taking an utterly familiar style and coming up with something new. ~ William Ruhlmann
