The barbed-wire vocals and slashing guitar of Mississippi-bred Smokey Wilson blend well with harpist Rod Piazza and company on this 1983 set first out on Murray Bros. Records. Not quite as stunning as his more recent work for Bullseye Blues, but definitely has some incendiary moments. ~ Bill Dahl

88th Street Blues album
$13.29 The Hollywood Fats Band's self-titled (and only) LP from 1979 (on PBT International -- long a collector's item) could be either lauded for being incredibly authentic or knocked for being a bit apish -- were it not for the level of musicianship from Mike "Fats" Mann on guitar, Al Blake on harp, Fred Kaplan on piano, Richard Innes on drums, and Canned Heat's Larry Taylor on upright bass. Great ensemble groove, although the excitement Fats could generate live never really translated to the studio. ~ Dan Forte

| | Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James CD (1993)
88th Street Blues CD music
$7.55 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes a representative one-stop compilation difficult, but from "Dust My Broom," James's signature tune and the set's opener, to "Standing ...

| | Robert Randolph Live At The Wetlands CD (2002) Digipak
88th Street Blues songs
$8.95 Recorded live at The Wetlands, New York, New York on August 23, 2001.
Sacred steel guitar seems tied in spirit and substance to its gospel piano counterpart: Both instruments encourage harmony-based performance, yet in the church context each emphasizes the dramatic gesture instead. This is especially true when performed live, as church music by definition tends to be. On this set, Randolph generates an enormous amount of heat. Much of his solo on the opening cut, "Ted's Jam," boils down to little more than a single note played repeatedly; other passages ...
