Snakebite is the best and most cohesive Magic Slim album to date, where all the things he does best come together in one place. Expertly produced by Dick Shurman, this spotlights all the groove that makes Slim a bandstand favorite, with none of the rough edges that mar his other studio or live efforts. The songs are top-notch (seven of the 11 tunes here are Slim originals), and this version of the Teardrops -- Nick Holt on bass, Allen Kirk on drums, and Michael Dotson on second guitar -- lay a greasy pocket down behind their leader that fits perfectly. Slim's vocals are spot-on, and his guitar work is his most focused yet. A truly inspired session, this is the perfect introduction to Magic Slim. ~ Cub Koda
Recorded at Hot Ham & Cheese, Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Beverly Zeldin-Palmer.

Snakebite CD music
$16.85 This is a 25-song compilation drawn from Littlefield's output for Modern between 1949 and 1952, including the sole hit he scored for that label, "It's Midnight (No Place to Go)." Littlefield is somewhat more obscure than many other artists mining a similar blues/R&B crossover field in Los Angeles studios in the early 1950s, such as Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, and Floyd Dixon. On the basis of the music here, Littlefield deserves to be in the same echelon as the aforementioned performers. He was a fine pianist who was skilled in the boogie woogie style and tempered for the times with a modern R&B influence. His use ...

| | Buddy Miles Blues Berries CD (2002) (Import) Germany
Snakebite album
$9.49 Buddy Miles has never been an easy artist to categorize. Is he is a rocker, a bluesman, or a soulster? Truth be told, he is all of those things rolled into one; over the years, his work has been influenced by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Muddy Waters to James Brown and Sly Stone. Recorded in Texas in 2000, Blues Berries is primarily an album of blues-rock with soul and funk references. Miles was 53 at the time, and the veteran singer/drummer is very much on top of his game on sweaty offerings like "Bayou Delta," "Compassion for the Blues," and "Texas Cannonball" (an ode to the late Freddie King). The impressive band that Miles leads, the Blues Berries, is quite mindful of the Texas blues and blues-rock traditions -- fans of King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, and Johnny Winter should have no problem getting into either the original material or an inspired performance of ...

| | Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Muddy Waters CD (2003)
Snakebite music CDs
$7.99 Recorded between 1941 & 1976. Includes liner notes by Robert Gordon.
As part of the compilation series issued in conjunction with the major television series documentary The Blues, this is a collection of 16 of Waters' more notable performances. Though they span his entire career, actually all but three of them are taken from his prime years for Chess Records between the late '40s and mid-'60s. The two-disc The Anthology: 1947-1972 remains the best Waters best-of (and there have been a number of them) if you want to spend some more money, but this is pretty good if you can be satisfied with a single-disc collection. Many listeners would rate "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Rollin' & Tumblin'," "Rollin' Stone," "Long Distance Call," "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Mannish Boy," "Trouble No More," "Got My Mojo Working," and "You Shook Me" (all of which are here) as not just ...
