Windham Hill: The First Ten Years is a retrospective celebrating the artists and artistry of the pioneering new age label's first full decade. And while the label's compilation release schedule is brisk to say the least, this two-disc set features at least one track from anyone who's ever recorded for the imprint's main new age division. It's heavy on tasteful contemporary instrumentalists like pensive guitar virtuosos Alex de Grassi and Robbie Basho or pianist George Winston; in between, there's some understated, almost ambient electronica from Mark Isham and a few gems from lesser-known Windham artists. The comp is essential for anyone who has been with the label since the beginning, as it offers a look back while providing a nicely varied new age soundtrack (the songs are sequenced perfectly). Windham Hill: The First Ten Years will also appeal to listeners curious about the label, since it can be a chore sifting through its glut of mood-themed compilations to find a decent introductory set. ~ Johnny Loftus

Windham Hill: The First Ten Years
$8.69 The departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997 no doubt unsettled his former R.E.M.-mates, who found themselves straddling not only creative, but personal crossroads. Rather than giving up, the remaining members of R.E.M. reinvented themselves and released UP, a stunning, eloquent album of dark vulnerability and experimentalism. The emotional disquiet Stipe evokes is nearly shocking in its plainspoken lyricism. Songs like the agonized "Sad Professor" and the wary, hypnotic "Suspicion" seem almost too naked for Stipe, who spent years cloaking his words in mumbles and misnomers. For the first time, lyrics are even included in the packaging.
"Hope" is a breathless, galloping piece of pseudo-electronica ...

Windham Hill: The First Ten Years
$13.29 The Chieftains have always worked in their own carefully defined middle ground between pop crossovers like Clannad and rigid, inflexible traditionalists. Maybe that's why they're one of the longest-lived and best-loved groups in all of Irish music. They never lose touch with tradition, but as past recordings have proven, they're not afraid to work with artists from different musical worlds. TEARS OF STONE is an album of collaborations with pop artists on original tunes (Joni Mitchell sings on a version of her own "Magdalene Laundries") and traditional ...

Windham Hill: The First Ten Years
$18.19 Kitaro has long been one of the linchpins of new age music, and his sizable discography might prove intimidating to newcomers. For that reason, BEST OF TEN YEARS 1976-1986 is a great place for the uninitiated to start. Over two discs and 18 tracks, BEST OF TEN YEARS provides an excellent overview of Kitaro's art, which centers on soothing, symphonic landscapes generated primarily by synthesizer.
Many of Kitaro's best and best-known albums--KI, OASIS, and the SILK ROAD series among them--were released in the first decade of his career, and highlights from those albums are included here. Kitaro's devoted international fanbase hold fast to the notion that his music is deeply spiritual, transcendent, and transformative, and a listen through the moving compositions ...
