| | Winter's Solstice V CD (1 Customer Review)
In what has become a tired (albeit profitable) theme, the Windham Hill recording company offers A Winter's Solstice V. The performances are fine, as expected, and the overall mood is both quiet and reflective; however, one has to wonder how many Winter Solstice's one needs. ~ Robert Taylor

Winter's Solstice V
$12.95 INNER VOICES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
The best instrumental albums have the power to engender a kind of bestilling, ablutionary effect. This collection of sweeping tapestries from Native American flautist R. Carlos Nakai is one such collection. And though "haunting" may seem a somewhat threadbare bit of musical ...
| | Cannibal Corpse Tomb Of The Mutilated CD (1992)
Winter's Solstice V
$9.69 Released in 1992, Tomb of the Mutilated helped establish Cannibal Corpse's reputation as one of metal's goriest, most vile outfits. Boasting some of the sickest album art and song titles of all time, the band's attention-getting tactics worked perfectly and record sales soared. Cannibal Corpse then became one of the biggest names in the death metal genre -- just as the group's discs and live performances were being banned all over the world. Listeners unfamiliar with the belching vocal style and pummeling drum and guitar attack typical of death metal probably won't understand what separates this or any other record that adheres so stringently to the genre's formula, but learned fans have come to appreciate Tomb of the Mutilated as a solid, if not important, offering. Vocalist Chris Barnes' constant barrage of Cookie Monster-esque lowdown grunting is pretty much unintelligible throughout, leaving his gross-out lyrics offensive only to those who read them. However, the effect works nicely and maintains tradition. Standout tracks include "Beyond the Cemetery" -- which boasts the record's best riffs ...

Winter's Solstice V
$17.35 The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your ...
| | Golana Moon Of First Snow: Native American Flute Music With Accompaniment CD (2002)
Winter's Solstice V
$14.49 Although Golaná is a more mystical name and thus more in line with the cool spiritual vibe of this Native American flute odyssey, the artist spills the beans in the liner notes by informing listeners that his real name is the much less exotic Scott Cunningham. No matter his heritage, he captures a graceful vibe by blending a handful of flutes (Native American E-minor and C-minor, bamboo bass flute) and hand-drum rhythms with guitars and keyboards. Some fans of this type of music (whose recordings always include moonlit imagery for some reason) prefer a more sparse, unplugged approach, just flute and percussion. But the outside rhythms and harmonies keep each track from sounding too similar to the last. The idea is to blend melancholy feelings with more hopeful, anticipatory thoughts, but always in the mode of deep, expansive contemplation. Melissa Hasin's cello adds a mournful effect to "Time of Long Nights" and a classical, chamber music flavor to "Water from Heaven." Golaná's liner note reflections help paint the imagery behind the haunting soundtrack. All of this is best enjoyed, of course, by fans of guys like Gary Stroutsos or R. Carlos Nakai. ~ Jonathan Widran
