PLAINS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
A distinctly American sensibility comes shining through the august soundscapes of master new-age pianist George Winston. This is not too surprising. In addition to his generous catalog of releases for Windham Hill, Winston has also written the soundtracks to a Charlie Brown film on the Constitution and released albums on the Informed Democracy label.
PLAINS makes clear, however, that there are some dark, occasionally unsettling undertones to Winston's aesthetic. Such shadows belie the notion that new age is a genre without a sinister side. For one thing, Winston is not afraid to drift into angular, Thelonious Monk-like playing, as he does on a reading of Angelo Badalamenti's "The Swan." Despite the familiar rolling rushes of melody that introduce the album-opening "Dubuque," calling to mind, as they always do, Civil War documentaries and pre-game baseball tributes, Winston plays a portion of the song's refrain on plucked piano strings. "Before Barbed Wire" is another highlight, its lightly roiling melodic tension resolving into gushes of major chords. For good measure, PLAINS includes two slack-key solo guitar pieces--played by Winston himself--as bonus tracks.
Early pressings include two limited edition bonus tracks.
Includes liner notes by George Winston.

This solid collection is a compelling career overview of one of rock's most distinctive groups. Led by Mark Knopfler, whose deadpan vocal style and stunning guitar technique characterize the band's sound, Dire Straits burst on the scene in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing." This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later hits, the lead-off track's clean shuffle rhythm and ...

| | Laura Theodore What The World Needs Now Is Love CD (2003)
Plains album
$13.15 Laura Theodore has one of the most striking voices in jazz -- a clear mezzo that drops unexpectedly into a rich and throaty tenor and soars upward again at the drop of a beat. Her theatrical training is fully in evidence on her fifth album as a leader, What the World Needs Now Is Love; she takes such hoary material as "I'm in the Mood for Love" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" and makes it sound like something new and surprising. Her rendition of "Fever," on the other hand, brings no new insights to the song, but she manages to deepen and broaden its emotional depth by the sheer power of her voice. The album's highlight is a strangely lighthearted arrangement of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." More skillful production would have made this album an unalloyed pleasure; as it is, unfortunately, the sound tends to be compressed, claustrophobic, and brassy, especially on the songs with orchestral accompaniment. Theodore's voice is shown off to best advantage in those moments when it isn't fighting the orchestra for space; the voice-and-bass duo arrangement of "How Deep Is the Ocean," for example. Lovers of vocal jazz will enjoy this album, but those with a more casual interest may find themselves distracted by its marginal sonic qualities. ~ Rick Anderson
Laura Theodore is a compelling singer who employs and enjoys a wide vocal, emotional and stylistic range. Audiences and the best of musicians alike routinely marvel at Laura's musicality, flexibility of voice, rhythmic perfection, and the singer's astonishing breadth of repertoire. On this CD, Laura celebrates her love for the classic popular standard song with a few suprises along the way! "What the World Needs Now is Love" features the Juliene Purefoy Big Band and contains immortal standards, ranging from the Golden Age of Gershwin and Rodgers, and swinging us on to Bacharach and the blues, which Laura burnishes with awesome authority and authenticity. "As a singer, Laura Theodore has it all. A dynamic four-octave range that allows her to soar, crystal coloratura clear into the Maynard-sphere and then power-dive into the growling grit-and-gravel of the gutter, effortlessly and believably, with no glitches, gaps, gulps or gasps in the transition. What’s more, she has the imagination and daring to explore new, meaningful interpretations of well-known lyrics and give them fresh, innovative excitement and relevance; she has an inherent “jazz-sense” that permeates and electrifies her every performance, which she aptly describes as “New Vintage Jazz.”Backings include “doing-it-the-hard-way” with acoustic bass only on one track, a trio on a few others, and Juliene Purefoy’s Big Band on most. Whatever the setting, La Belle Theodore is outstanding. Sensational tracks include the Big Band-powered opener, ...
| | Phil Woods And Carl Saunders CD (2004)
Plains CD music
$13.45 This session recorded in 2003 features the music of Henry Mancini played by a Quintet led by Phil Woods on alto saxophone and Carl Saunders on trumpet and flugelhorn. Featuring over 75 minutes of music the CD reprises some of Henry Mancini's greatest jazz compositions including The Pink Panther, Mr. Lucky and tunes from the Peter Gunn TV series soundtrack recordings."Even more than nine years after his death, Henry Mancini is the most famous of all film composers. His film writing was jazz-oriented without being jazz, and his arrangements were both subservient to a movie's story (as all scores must be) and strong enough to stand on their own apart from the picture." "One of the all-time great alto-saxophonists and a major force in the jazz scene since at least 1954, Phil Woods is not only one of the masters of bebop but a musician who through the years has extended the idiom through his personal voice, inventive repertoire and inspired settings." "Carl Saunders is not as world famous yet due to his valuable but underrated work as a lead trumpeter in big bands and being based in Los Angeles. But his playing on his three solo albums and the Jazzed Media CD "Phil Urso and Carl Saunders Salute Chet Baker" show just how tremendous a trumpeter he is, ranking near the top of his field." "Listeners will have no difficulty having fun listening to the infectious performances on one of the finest jazz tributes to the music of Henry Mancini."Scott Yanow,Author ...
